About The Event

The Ashton Ukrainian club has gone from strength to strength following the re-launch in 2021 and a move to Saturday night. For 2025 we're looking once again to continue delivery quality rare and underplayed soul from the residents and ever growing list of outstanding guests.

Speaking of ‘Rare & Underplayed Soul’ we use that phrase to capture what Ashton tries to deliver musically, which is worth expanding upon.

Mainly it's an attempt to move away from the standard music policy strap lines we’re all so used to seeing like; Northern, 60s & 70s, Crossover, Modern, across the board etc. etc. whilst genuinely trying to capture an ethos. The words ‘rare’ and ‘underplayed’ are intended to apply both in their own right and together, it certainly isn't supposed to be limited rare records that are also underplayed……we should have added quality in there too LOL.

In a nutshell you will hear all three combinations of the phrase on any given night at the Ukrainian Club; ‘Rare’ (but not for rarities sake) ‘Underplayed’ (but not because they’re not good enough) and of course ‘Rare & Underplayed’ but, all with one eye on the dancefloor.

We don’t have a music ‘policy’, all our residents & guests are free to express themselves as they wish, which we believe adds to the magic. So simply expect a great night of quality soul music if you ever get the chance to join us at our friendly little club.

Whatever Robbo calls you is nothing compared to what he calls me, you can't take it seriously, just ask Mick what he use to call him.😆

I'm thinking of arranging my selections for the night based on label colour Bob, starting with plain white, then black etc. and eventually progressing to those vivid muli-coloured ones that make me feel like I'm seeing double 🤪

I've been pleasantly surprised with the reaction to Keith & Billie by the dancefloor at Ashton - you never know do you!!

As it happens the flip is also something that was otherwise never released until 2004 on Grapevine 2000 (Jerry Williams)

Are you saving the Yellow ones till last or are you going to try and go a full set without relying on even one. They said it can't be done, a full set without a Yellow label.👌

Are you trying to confuse me Bob? - I hadn't thought of that 🤪

Forget the coloured labels Simon, as long as one of them has Mac Staten printed on it on it then that'll do for me .👌

Into Detroit for the next selection from Simon Ingham sounds like a four figure record, but definitely won't upset your Bank Manager!!

Well, its time for my monthly shower again, clean the smeg off my important little parts, dry behind my ears and polish my shoes on both sides.

As always, another great line up, so looking forward to getting there early and settling the stall out and carrying on with full intensions.

Would be nice to see Sir Jessie Pinkman there!

All being well mate I'll be there, my turn to get the drinks in I take it  You say you polish your shoes Andrew but I always thought you bought a new pair rather than do all that needless polishing.😄

I take it you did mean your important little parts and not your impotent little parts.😜

Looking like another busy one on Saturday March 15th at Ashton Ukrainian Club. Astounding feedback yet again, as this event goes from Strength to Strength thanks to The Ashton Faithful and our ever growing list of first time attendees!!!

Roger Banks is really looking forward to Saturday, as are we, he's been doing a deep dive into the collection and an all action 60 minutes is guaranteed!!

Chris Penn has been adding to his playbox, a few classic examples of all the guest DJs can be found via the link at the bottom of the post to our Soul Source event page thread, lots of RSVP for the event already!!

Ashton Regular Geoff Stubbs will be back behind the decks, to showcase some quality Rare Soul 45s, look forward to that!!

Phil Dunn will be opening the night up, before we dim the lights and light the blue touch paper for an evening of Soul Heaven!!

"The Vinylfellas" AKA Chris Churm and Simon Ingham will be filling in the gaps, early doors, before providing a Silky Smooth finish to your evening!!

We run 7pm-00.30 and just £6 admission pay on the door, gets you in on the action. Hope to see you all Saturday, BUT have a great night, whatever you choose to do!!!

Roger has been in touch and really excited about his return to Ashton and as always a few surprises and memories of Hyde Botanical club, a much missed venue from the late 80s which Chris Churm was heavily involved with and memories of finding in a shop in Tameside multiple copies of this beauty !!!
