About The Event

It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing to Soul Source members, the passing of one of the Lowton Civic Hall originators and driving forces, and Culcheth resident DJ Kev Murphy.

As a mark of respect, I have decided not to run the Culcheth Soul Night event on April 5th.

Another exceptional night, and just a matter of 5 weeks away!, a great way to kick off the Easter month of April and announce Spring in true CVH fashion. As always, Barry Maleedy's line-up of djs constantly changes and everyone involved brings something new/different to the vinyl table from their own personal boxes of 7" tricks. The cream of the North wests collectors and seasoned dusc spinners are at the core of the Lowton ethos, keeping that famous spirit well and truly in focus, plus plenty of travellers from all neck of the woods, adding that different dimension.

CVH and it's twinny, Ashton Uky, deliver the alternate goods every month, ensuring that folks will be guaranteed 100%, a thoroughly interesting and revitalizing night out at both.

As always, if you've you've not joined the throng before, then do yourself a favour and come and get a shot of redemption with the Culcheth Crew..where the good times roll!👍

Here's a list, organized by Barry, in anticipation of the recent celebratory All Dayer, held on March 1st. A very handy list of accommodation, if you fancy a stopover, all approved and within a 10-12 min distance of the venue.

Check out their websites for current rates and any discounts😉👍

Are you sure you can get your legs moving that fast mate. I once commented to Rob Messer that the Velvet Satins is near impossible to dance to, so he set about proving me wrong when it came on, I'll never say that again. 😄👌

ALWAYS the 1st Saturday in the month...RARE NORTHERN SOUL meets QUALITY MODERN SOUL in TWO ROOMS, kicking off April in style and covering the decades and featuring some of the biggest dancefloor packers, laced with underplayed and semi known gems, plus bang up to date modern releases.
CULCHETH is leading from the front and carrying on a great tradition in the North-West of spinning tunes that are an all-together refreshing difference from the norm! There'll be a 'SPECIAL' reason to come to CULCHETH on the 5th!

WATCH THIS SPACE…😉👍💃👍👏

Baz here's a modern soul winner from the Prestwich & Lowton back room era. I always loved playing it, the bass always did it for me. Absolutely brilliant.

Mr M here's another one from the same era, I think originally this was a secret bonus track at the end of his album. I might as well post it whilst I'm on a roll.😆

I read somewhere this was a Mecca spin, I must have missed it that week or else I'd have definitely searched for one. I've had to settle for the Hit em hard soundtrack for my home listening pleasure. I have absolutely no idea if this is likely to be played on the 5th but it'd be great if it was.🫶

So here's the heads up...

Soul Essence comes to Culcheth!
The first weekend in April 2025 will be the first time in 32 years that there will be NO Soul Essence weekender!

The Yarmouth Weekender has been an institution on the UK Soul Scene and has spearheaded the rise of 70's/Crossover/Modern Soul to a generation of young & old Soulies from all over the UK (and beyond). In our Modern Room at Culcheth on Saturday 5th April we are proud to hold a 'Soul Essence Special' with original founder Bob Cosby as our Guest DJ. Bob is well known in the North West and we know he'll bring his quality tunes to the Culcheth table. We also have Soul Sam, the man who was the main guest at Yarmouth from the very beginning to the very end, cementing his residency at Culcheth with plenty of Yarmouth classics on the night. Not only that, we also have our resident Steve Plumb playing his memories of being one of the main room DJ team at Soul Essence. Add to that our other Culcheth residents Pete and Nick (who also played at Yarmouth in later years) and you have a potential killer night of 70's, Modern Soul & Crossover at the 'do within a do', the Culcheth Modern Room.

See you there!

I think the "Hit em hard" soundtrack album came out first Baz so I take it you'll be playing the 2nd issue. 😄 👌 Don't forget OVO 🫶 Only joking.

I heard Yarmouth promoters Bob & Gavin used to encourage their Saturday night guest DJ's to play a common soul track mixed in with all the rare stuff in their set. I'm not sure it's true, but you stated Steve will be playing some of his Yarmouth memories, so if it is true then can he remember any that he played over the years. I think Sam was partial to a bit of Candi Staton "Young hearts run free" ,Here's a couple of classics that would have fit the bill perfectly The Detroit Emeralds "Feel the need" or David Ruffin "Walk away from love"
