About this time every year, whenever the Lowton anniversary is mentioned and the hundreds of brilliant records that were played there, there's always one that stands out for me, well actually there's two. The instrumental was played by Chris King to an absolutely packed dancefloor at the Lowton New Year allnighter. A few weeks later came the vocal. It was mind blowing, like hearing The Vibrations "Cause your mine" for the very first time at the Torch.

Bob, remember this back in around 98?, instrumental were being played...stormer....probably first heard the vocal at 100 club via Mick Smith

I'm rubbish with dates but I'm pretty certain the instrumental was played by Chris King first at Lowton that night.

For some reason I have it in my head that Neil Rushton had something to do with the discovery of the vocal but I'm not 100% certain.

A great track Bob and one that I associate with Robbo, who reminds us of just how good it is by featuring it from time to time in his excellent sets👍

We had Tom Smith from Beatin' Rhythm and I was volunteered to do a Motown/Club Classics spot, no Frank Wilson though 😉

I'm very much looking forwards to the Lowton Anniversary Extravaganza on 1st Feb. I was truly honoured to be part of the team from the early days, which was certainly a springboard for my meagre DJing career (a very humble thanks to Kev, Dave & Paul for putting their trust in me 😚)

Lowton was an amazing venue when you look back, a Friday Night Soul night with a regular attendance circa 500 I'm sure it was - someone can correct me! .... I remember looking out at the crowd one month from behind the deck and the atmosphere just blew me away ....... getting the needle onto the vinyl is always a challenge when your hand is shaking like a leaf!

Lowton was a Friday night soul night where you could literally play any top nighter sound of the time and it would ram the floor - There were so many, I tried to think of one that isn't played so often at the moment (or I don't hear at least)

Here you go

I remember Paul Shirley playing The Turnpikes "Cast a spell" in Lowtons back room one night and I thought I'll ring my go to guy for anything rare soul wise Ian "Del Boy" Cunliffe first thing Monday. Yes I have a copy stuck on my wall he said., thankfully he sold it to me including the blue tack with some of the wall plaster still stuck to it as well 😂 Unbelievably it plays great.

Great story that Bob and you mention two guys it's a pleasure to have on the 'Wheels of Steel' on the 1st Feb 👍 Two guys who have been on the scene for a long time and both of which over the years have bought, sold and played more records that I can think of. Looking forward to their sets on the day 👏

It was Dave Flynn when he came up to Lowton with the Capital Soul Club crew - not NYE but not sure of the exact event, more research required!

Many thanks to my source of knowledge - Mr Baldwin

Baz, on the subject of Paul Shirley do you remember the time we stood behind him on the stage in the main room when he played The 4 Tops & The Supremes for the first time and we both looked at each other, I think you'd ordered a few copies from a Lebanese record shop even before the record had finished playing. 😆

If I'm not mistaken I think Rob Haigh bought a copy off you as well.

November 2001 yep?

a rough review of the nite inc playlists can be had here

Thanks Mike for that, I'm thinking the Mayfield Singers instrumental was played NYE 2000/01 and the vocal 11 months later?, from the review of the night though it seems Irish Greg was the one that played it 👍
