Bazm 1,170 Posted January 21 (edited) Room 3 Rare and Underplayed 60’s 70’s Soul and Crossover During its 20 plus years, LOWTON CIVIC had a rich history of pushing the musical boundaries not only in the main room with an exception guest DJ list but also in the two back rooms, with everything from the very sadly departed, Pete Coulson’s R&B sessions to a brief flirtation with Soulful House. But it was the ‘Room With a View’ and the superb DDA sessions hosted by Paul Sadot, Joan Livesey and the late, must missed and much loved Karl Rhodes along with their guests, who made such an effort to be a part of these back room sessions… The LOWTON back room sessions became the inspiration for the Kenwood Suite at the BURY TOWN HALL ALL-NIGHTERS, which in turn was continued and kept us all sane during lockdown as the Bury Virtual All Nighter online stream broadcasts. We are pleased to confirm that the Rare and Underplayed room at the Anniversary All-Dayer continues that ethos and many of the DJ’s involved in some of those brilliant sessions as well as some new faces will be digging deep into their collections to bring you an unrivalled selection of rare soul sounds from the 60’s and 70’s Edited January 21 by Bazm 3
Micksmix 2,746 Posted January 21 Some great nights in the Kenwood Suite, which ended up outshining the main room, such was the quality of the music and yeah fond memories during a dark period via The BVAN sessions, including recording a live session or two at Simon's, remember Pete and our Anthemic opening record? Great memories!!
Bazm 1,170 Posted January 22 Simply Soul - https://www.firstexperiencerecords.com/ - will be selling @ the next Culcheth event on February 1st - just like we were each month all those years ago on Friday nights @ Lowton in the 'Modern Room' !! 2

Popular Comment Bazm 1,170 Posted January 26 Popular Comment Looking forward to highlighting some of the records played at Lowton Civic over the years, both in the big room and back room... This enjoyed a place on the LOWTON CIVIC story as a back room spin from some of the DJ's playing 70's and Crossover in there before many of the sounds gained more acceptance and literally crossed-over to main rooms...including thjis current floorfiller STEVE CONNOR Take a bow 4

Mine was £25 of Johnny Manship and round about the same time bought Pat +The Blenders for £30 in the record bar at Lowton off Flanny I think. A sea of Sharks was probably the best way to describe Lowton Record Bar, all waiting for a feeding frenzy of the vinyl kind, some proper bargain buys to be had. I remember Plumby having multiples of The Philharmonics, Jeez oh for a time machine and a bucket load of cash!! 4

Quite right Mick, we wont mention the night some unsuscpecting soul turned up selling their collection, now that was a feeding frenzy to behold, mentioning no names Going swiftly back to the music, a Saints 'On THe Real Side' 70's spin when 70's was most definitely NOT in vouge, the aforementioned Philharmonics, for your aural pleasure...happy days 5

Mick, are you one of the lucky ones, does your copy have clean labels or like mine water damaged. I'm just thinking, now you've mentioned The Delegates of Soul does that mean you've licked your finger and stuck it in the Delegates of Soul pie and claimed it as your play this Saturday. It's a sure fire floor filler so well played mate. 1

Here's the first Calvin Lee Hughes – North Wales So taking a look at some of our DJ’s looking to entertain the crowd on Saturday, the first being Calvin Lee Hughes. It’s fair to say that over the years, Calvin has grown in stature and reputation as a bona-fide collector of Rare Soul and an excellent DJ as well. Calvin was a regular at LOWTON CIVIC and was taken under the wing of LOWTON main man, Kev Murphy, so we are looking forward to Calvin appearing in the main room at the LOWTON ANNIVERSARY ALL-DAYER, here’s just a few of his favourite memories from LOWTON and a selection of his current spins Calvin's Lowton Faves Anthony And Delsonics- Every Time Ellusions- You Didn’t Have To Leave The Group- I Don’t Like To Lose Johnny James- Tell You About My Girl Moses Dillard- I’ll Pay The Price Calvin’s Current Featured Spins Mixed Feelings- Shalala United Jerry Washington - Don’t Waste My Time Glades Masqueraders- That’s The Same Thing Soul Town Innersection- I’m In Debt To You Group 5 Don And Ron- I’m So So Sorry White Cliffs 4
