If you were into Northern Soul in the mid-to-late 1980s here in the South, then you may remember the fabulous Night Owl Soul Club in Brighton.
Founded by Jok Evans in 1985 and soon joined by the much missed and truly wonderful Andy Crane, these two spun magic Soul sounds every month at various venues. I remember Soulies, Mods and Scooter Boys all packing the floor and just loving the top sounds! So many records we'd never heard before. Other DJ's joined the Night Owl train giving us more great music: Paul Garoghan, Simon Penfold, David Nimmo and Lloyd Attrill.
By 1993, Night Owl was on the last Saturday of every month at the Madeira Hotel, Marine Parade (later the Funky Fish) and had a membership of over 800 with folk travelling from all over the South, London and beyond. Night Owl wound down in the early 2000's, but it was an important part in keeping Soul music alive on the South Coast during those years.
Well, it's been almost 20 years, folks, but for your pleasure, Night Owl Soul Club is back!
A few of us decided to have a reunion, so here it is, with original DJ's Jok Evans, Paula Crane, Paul Garoghan, David Nimmo, Steve Woolston and Colin Baldock.
Save the date, and we look forward to seeing you! KOKO
