About The Event

It is with great pleasure we announce a special night at CULCHETH on SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER when GRUMPY SOUL ‘takes over’ the venue to bring you a night of QUALITY RARE SOUL taking you back to those FANTASTIC GRUMPY nights, which were a magnet for those looking for something a little different from the norm.

GRUMPY SOUL started in 2011and ran off and on approximately  6years in Runcorn / Deeside If you ever attended Grumpy Soul in all its guises you'll know to expect a wicked selection of Rare Soul basically expect the unexpected!!

The original residents CARL FORTNUM, PHIL THRELFALL and JOAN LIVESEY will be together again, along with GRUMPY guest and CULCHETH resident KEV MURPHY plus guests, to be confirmed.

On the announcement of this Special Night, Joan says, “We're really chuffed to be asked to do something at this great venue and will do our best to re-create some of the atmosphere from those heady nights in Runcorn and down Deeside way.

Grumpy never set out to be anything other than a good soul night, eighties stylee. Our flyers always said "sounds from late Wigan, Stafford, Shotts, Parr Hall, Tony's and beyond ..." because that's the period we all cut our teeth on. The philosophy was always oriented around our firm belief that if a record is good enough it should be played and people should be dancing to it.

We were always so grateful that people travelled consistently from far and wide with the expectation that they'd hear quality records from the get-go, whether they cost £10 or £10,000 (in the insane world we now inhabit), the odd acetate and stuff that tends not to get played to death everywhere you go. It'll be exactly the same deal this time out.

We're absolutely delighted that Carl Fortnum - one of our long-standing residents - can make it and that Kev Murphy, who guested for us when we were in Runcorn, is also on board. (Sadly, our other resident Dave Welding can't make it this time; that would've been the icing on the cake ...) Joan and Phil will make up the numbers and play a few records too, as per.

Be so good to see some of the Grumpy regulars we haven't bumped into for four years or more (crikey) and hopefully one or two who never got to come along first time around.  Needless to say, we're well up for it.

So, join us on SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER and make this a night to remember...

Craig Hutchinson just told me a story when Lenny & Jim Tennant was double decking and Jim set him on fire. and then announced Lenny's on fire tonight.

He assures me it's a true story so Baz you better have a fire extinguisher near the stage just in case. lol

This story reminded me of the first time I heard The Mystiques was at Grumpys. I can't remember who played it but maybe on Saturday?

Great story Bob and one of my favourite records as well.... can't wait for tomorrow 👍

Thanks Baz, at last it's finally here! Lenny and Co are on fire and on the train as I type, Carl's doing his vocal excercises, Kev's toying with his which side gets an airing dilemma, and Phil's just tempted the Grumpy cat into his holdall, so it's all systems go.

There really is such a good buzz about tonight, and that's down to you guys. See you all later

GRUMPY SOUL @ CULCHETH  what can I say about last night, been a long time coming back,  me and Pete used to love Grumpy Soul events.  Last night was amazing, music was truly off the scale, so many faces I haven't seen for ages, company was top notch.  See you at the next one this time with my partner in crime Peter. On an even better point you didn't need to get the paddles out for me.
