About The Event

It is with great pleasure we announce a special night at CULCHETH on SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER when GRUMPY SOUL ‘takes over’ the venue to bring you a night of QUALITY RARE SOUL taking you back to those FANTASTIC GRUMPY nights, which were a magnet for those looking for something a little different from the norm.

GRUMPY SOUL started in 2011and ran off and on approximately  6years in Runcorn / Deeside If you ever attended Grumpy Soul in all its guises you'll know to expect a wicked selection of Rare Soul basically expect the unexpected!!

The original residents CARL FORTNUM, PHIL THRELFALL and JOAN LIVESEY will be together again, along with GRUMPY guest and CULCHETH resident KEV MURPHY plus guests, to be confirmed.

On the announcement of this Special Night, Joan says, “We're really chuffed to be asked to do something at this great venue and will do our best to re-create some of the atmosphere from those heady nights in Runcorn and down Deeside way.

Grumpy never set out to be anything other than a good soul night, eighties stylee. Our flyers always said "sounds from late Wigan, Stafford, Shotts, Parr Hall, Tony's and beyond ..." because that's the period we all cut our teeth on. The philosophy was always oriented around our firm belief that if a record is good enough it should be played and people should be dancing to it.

We were always so grateful that people travelled consistently from far and wide with the expectation that they'd hear quality records from the get-go, whether they cost £10 or £10,000 (in the insane world we now inhabit), the odd acetate and stuff that tends not to get played to death everywhere you go. It'll be exactly the same deal this time out.

We're absolutely delighted that Carl Fortnum - one of our long-standing residents - can make it and that Kev Murphy, who guested for us when we were in Runcorn, is also on board. (Sadly, our other resident Dave Welding can't make it this time; that would've been the icing on the cake ...) Joan and Phil will make up the numbers and play a few records too, as per.

Be so good to see some of the Grumpy regulars we haven't bumped into for four years or more (crikey) and hopefully one or two who never got to come along first time around.  Needless to say, we're well up for it.

So, join us on SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER and make this a night to remember...

Yeah, they were eight good years Baz where you’d hear one offs you couldn’t hear anywhere else and rarities alongside anything and everything else. If we believed it was good enough it got played.

Sure you’ll hear the same eclectic mix a week on Saturday but everything will be aimed at the folk coming through the door.

Reckon it’ll be buzzing 👍

Maths was never my strong point Phil 😉😆 but like you say it'l be a real eclectic (electric) mix knowing just some of what's in those boxes 💥

Can't wait 👍

Cheers Baz. Some of those playlists were very long as I recall LOL

Suffice to say, if rarities are your bag you might well hear Pee Wee Shuck and Huey, Kell Osborne, Foreign Blue Renaissance, Little John, CODs, Damon Fox, Eddie Parker, Prophets, Eddie Billups, William Powell, Combinations, Gwen Owens, Four Dynamics etc, plus a raft of unissued things, LP only tracks etc.

That said, you can also bank on hearing Miracles, Temps, Edwin Starr, Spyder Turner, Parliaments, Bobby Bland, Darell Banks, Steve Mancha, Dells, Artistics, Carl Carlton, Otis Clay and plenty of other, quality sounds that sometimes feel criminally taken for granted in a world where cost trumps value far too often.

Regardless, rare or not, fast or slow, as long as it’s soulful and danceable it’s all good as far as we’re concerned. Same as it ever was then, there’ll be a proper MIX aimed squarely at the dance floor!

Loads saying their coming and it promises to be a fantastic night 👍

One of my Grumpy memories that dragged me to the floor, slipped in with aplomb amongst a selection of the unobtainable and fitted so well....class is class, puts things in context nicely 💯

Another that did the same job for me......Kev Murph from his Grumpy set...not just a big hitter DJ... but I already knew that 👌

Something extra Grumpy brings is the opportunity to throw these gems in

Phil that's a great list of records there but for me you've left off the best one. Hank Hodge, why! have you sold it on, if not then do you want to.😀

Oh yes, there'll be plenty to go at Saturday night. Carl, Lenny, Kev, and Phil will bring the rare, the fabulous, and everything in between, yours truly the cheap and cheerful. So expect your favourites, your rarities, your exclusives, your one-offs, your classics, but above all expect quality.

It's going to be great!

You're right Bob, I'm not cheerful 😂

Be great to see you x

Joan if you're not cheerful then I'm a lost cause. My laughing valve seized up long ago. Even the big lad's given me the elbow. 😂

REALLY looking forward to it. Be so good to catch up with old mates, some of whom I haven't seen for ages. Hopefully there'll be plenty of new faces too and it feels like it's gonna be a busy old night. Hope so, some of those Grumpy nights were absolutely rocking from start to finish and it'd be great to feel a bit of that again. I've missed it!

Anyway, life's too flippin' short for warm-ups so you can rest assured that the music will be on it right from the get-go at 8pm. 👍

Raspberry pop tarts, I wonder if you can deep fry them like that other Scottish delicacy, deep fried Mars bar.

I can feel my arteries hardening just thinking about them. 🤣
