About The Event

It is with great pleasure we announce a special night at CULCHETH on SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER when GRUMPY SOUL ‘takes over’ the venue to bring you a night of QUALITY RARE SOUL taking you back to those FANTASTIC GRUMPY nights, which were a magnet for those looking for something a little different from the norm.

GRUMPY SOUL started in 2011and ran off and on approximately  6years in Runcorn / Deeside If you ever attended Grumpy Soul in all its guises you'll know to expect a wicked selection of Rare Soul basically expect the unexpected!!

The original residents CARL FORTNUM, PHIL THRELFALL and JOAN LIVESEY will be together again, along with GRUMPY guest and CULCHETH resident KEV MURPHY plus guests, to be confirmed.

On the announcement of this Special Night, Joan says, “We're really chuffed to be asked to do something at this great venue and will do our best to re-create some of the atmosphere from those heady nights in Runcorn and down Deeside way.

Grumpy never set out to be anything other than a good soul night, eighties stylee. Our flyers always said "sounds from late Wigan, Stafford, Shotts, Parr Hall, Tony's and beyond ..." because that's the period we all cut our teeth on. The philosophy was always oriented around our firm belief that if a record is good enough it should be played and people should be dancing to it.

We were always so grateful that people travelled consistently from far and wide with the expectation that they'd hear quality records from the get-go, whether they cost £10 or £10,000 (in the insane world we now inhabit), the odd acetate and stuff that tends not to get played to death everywhere you go. It'll be exactly the same deal this time out.

We're absolutely delighted that Carl Fortnum - one of our long-standing residents - can make it and that Kev Murphy, who guested for us when we were in Runcorn, is also on board. (Sadly, our other resident Dave Welding can't make it this time; that would've been the icing on the cake ...) Joan and Phil will make up the numbers and play a few records too, as per.

Be so good to see some of the Grumpy regulars we haven't bumped into for four years or more (crikey) and hopefully one or two who never got to come along first time around.  Needless to say, we're well up for it.

So, join us on SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER and make this a night to remember...

Top work Baz!

The extra hour means we've been able to secure a second guest and we're delighted that one of Scotland's finest and all round good geezer Lenny Harkins will be heading south with his box of tricks.

Lenny guested for us at Grumpy in Runcorn and always adds to the mix.

Looking like a great night!

Record peddlers are very welcome, actively encouraged in fact, but if you're bringing anything larger than a fifty box please do let us know so we can reserve a table for you. Can't wait!!!

Gonna be a great night Baz! We’re delighted Lenny can join us. The Scottish contingent were absolutely integral to making GS what it was and we’re expecting a few friendly marauders on the 4th 👍

Simply can't wait - I'm well overdue a Grumpy injection...all references to a great lineup simply unnecessary and truly fantastic to see Mr Harkins tempted down from across the northern boarder.......NOT TO BE MISSED

Really looking forward to this, as are quite a few I hear which is brilliant. Been a long time since the Grumpy faithful got together, can't wait

For those who have never been to a Grumpy shindig, it's just great tunes, all night, regardless of price. Carl will bring you everything you can think of, plus a great singing voice. Phil raises the bar in both stature and quality. Lenny is an all round good egg with more than a cracking tune or two, and Kev professionally fills in any kinks or dents in the proceedings.

Most importantly, you guys bring the phwoarrrr. What's not to love!

Typical Joan, hiding her own light under a bushel.

I’ve never, ever heard her play a less than excellent set in all the years I’ve known her. She heads-up the QA dept and without her energy and passion Grumpy would never have been what it was. Proper champion of proper soul records and proof positive that lasses can really do stuff given half a chance.

Leave the sparklers til the Sunday and get yourself to Culcheth on Saturday the 4th for some rare soul fireworks. 👍

All part of the adventure - in years to come legend will tell of the fact that Grumpy Soul was a magical venue veiled in an invisible aura which only revealed itself to those who were meant to find it 😆

😂

Phil what was that time Andy Rix was DJing and rang two hours later after he left the club, to say he was STILL on the Runcorn expressway 🤣

He didn't ring Mick, he staggered back in after two hours looking like he had been wandering lost in the desert for a month 😂

Yeah, they were eight good years Baz where you’d hear one offs you couldn’t hear anywhere else and rarities alongside anything and everything else. If we believed it was good enough it got played.

Sure you’ll hear the same eclectic mix a week on Saturday but everything will be aimed at the folk coming through the door.

Reckon it’ll be buzzing 👍
