Culcheth With Carl Maria Willingham Find Out More

There have been some great nights at Culcheth since the return from lock down, a fantastic venue and always a selection of class music across the board with a good mix of guaranteed dance floor smashes and some interesting underplayed and deserving choons thrown in too. If you haven't made it there yet you should and if you have you know what I mean

Ain't it funny how some records bring back vivid memories of when you first had the pleasure of hearing them.

For me one of Ian Levine's best ever discoveries is Steve Karmen's "Breakaway" and one of the best ever cover up names "Black ships to hell".

Shortly after he played it at the Mecca I was at a midweek soul night somewhere in Leigh run by local Leigh legends Walt & Chaddy when they played

"Black ships to hell"through the mic from a tape they'd recorded at the Mecca, I think they may have even left Levine introducing it, how good is that. 

Ian played the instrumental side then but here's the wonderful part 1 vocal side featuring Jimmy Radcliffe. 

Just imagine hearing this for the very first time now.

It’s been a while since we welcomed Carl and Maria Willingham to CULCHETH but we are pleased to say that they are ‘back on the road’ and heading to CULCHETH on SATURDAY JULY 2nd.

Okay here's one for the next instalment at Culcheth next Saturday. Apparently this was played at Wigan but I don't remember it from there. it must have

been played after I'd stopped going, I can definitely see it going down a storm there, I wonder if it was covered up?  Mick.

Not sure if it was ever c/u I do seem to remember it being on the weekly soul bowl lists for 75p

Yes Mick absolutely, so many not rare enough records appeared on soul bowls front page. Where's Stewies (Family Guy) time machine when you need it. lol

Would they play “it’s easy” on Champ. I’m no longer ( or to be honest never was much) a traveller but would make an exception.

I'm sure they'll have more than enough to make it worth the 30 mins journey up the east lancs along with Sir Bob and the other residents, let's just say you won't be disappointed!!

Well the long awaited return of Carl and Maria Willingham behind the decks seems to have captured the imagination, both on here and facebook. Looks like another top night in prospect, can't wait!!

Never a dull night and always a class selection of tunes to be heard at Culcheth in either room - looking forward to it as always 

Just found this lurking at the back of the shelves and it's one I purchased off Steve"Interesting"Davis a few years ago.

Expansions Dean Johnson would have described this as bouncy castle or a happy modern/northern dancer. I've always loved Deans description Bouncy castle

I'm not 100% certain where this tune turned up from, in fact I don't think anybody does. It just appeared like magic.

What I do know is 2 main dealers fell out over it.  I think I'll take it with me on Saturday.

Yes as ever the ultimate blend of styles and tempos, back to the halcyon days, one that never really got hammered. Still sounding good to these ears
