About The Event

The return of the Ashton Ukrainian continues after a few fabulous nights in 2021 and we're hoping for another great installment.

If you haven't been before here's a potted history from our very own Chris Churm:

The club was originally based at the  Dukinfield Masonic hall, starting well in January 2017  attended by around 100 guests. Resident DJs were Brian Lester, Chris Churm and Chris Penn.

The venue was great with a large dance floor  and ran until May 2017 when it moved to the Ukrainian Club, a slightly smaller venue (capacity 130) perfect the type of night we were trying to run delivering a mix of lesser known, rare and under played soul; a bit of everything.

The  first date  was June 2017 and was a  great night musically. January 2020 was the 3rd anniversary with guests Phil wainwright and Alex Jones,  respected collector/ DJs to entertain us with their fantastic collections and they were superb, and it was one of our best nights.

Following that in Feb 2020  Les Harrison (one of our regular DJs) and Geoff Stubbs of Stockport were our guests and were excellent as usual .

I must  thank Les Harrison and sue  who were at our first night in 2017 and have only missed the odd one when he has been booked to DJ at Culcheth and our dates unfortunately clashed . He has also helped us to sort the gremlins in the sound system on a few occasions.

Sadly  Brian Lester  who used to play some great tracks decided to bow out from the scene  and our other original DJ maestro Chris Penn moved to the  north east, he  will be missed ,but he has assured us he will be back to annoy us from time to time to DJ for us. .

Here is a list of some of the guys and girls that have played for us and have all taken part in the spirit of our humble Ukrainian club soul evening.

Carl and Maria Willingham, John Hillel, Dave Hall, Chris Penn, Brian Lester, Les Harrison, Derek Watmough, Ian Cunliffe,  Dave Beech, Carol Burgess, Simon Ingham, Mick Howard, Carol-Ann McCarthy, Geoff Stubbs, Geoff Buckley, Tom Dacey, John Baggaley, Dave Flynn, Les Hare, Mark Tobin, Ged Gibbons and Phil Etchells  (sorry if I missed anyone).

As we all know  in March  2020 (just as our guests  Simon Ingham and Mick Howard  were ready to  DJ for us) the pandemic struck and everything stopped but the restart will pick up where we left off and  Simon alongside Mick will be our first guests, hopefully we can bounce back .

Post pandemic the club have informed us that for the night to continue it will have to be a Saturday night event, ironically that is what we first wanted and we think could be better for everyone so keep an eye on the soul source calendar for future instalments.

We hope everyone is well and can’t wait to see you all again

Apologies for lateness, but been busy.

Each time I go to the Ashton Ukrainian Club soul night it seems better than the previous one. As I said to friends it is like a great allnighter but one that you can still go to bed afterwards at a reasonable time.

As usual I must say thank you to Derek and Janet Watmough for kindly giving Sandy and myself a lift to the club, it would be quite difficult to get there otherwise.

As we took our seats the DJ (Phil Dunn I think) was playing I Wanna Give You Tomorrow by Benny Troy, reminded me of seeing him at Prestatyn, seems years ago now.

All the DJs played fine sets, although as usual my memory has let me down a bit, I did take some paper and a pen but forgot a torch, it is a bit dark for writing without one. But some of the records played included Sad Little Girl; I'm Waiting; Down And Out; My Love Has Gone (my favourite record of the night); A Touch Of Venus (great oldie that you don't hear that often); You're Gonna Wreck My Life; I Didn't Try; I Think It's Gonna Work Out Fine (Wilson Williams); Hard Road To Hoe; Wake Up People And Live; with the final record being Make Sure by the Dells, reminded me of These Old Shoes with Jo Wallace et al. As my short list illustrates a wide range of sounds were played, and they made sure the dance floor was busy.

As usual there were plenty of friends there, great to see them and thanks for your company and chat. It's obvious that the people who attend this club know their soul music.

Thanks to all the DJs and the staff at the club for an excellent night. Hope to be at the next one.

The usual top night at the Ukrainian, a great little club that has a big reputation. Where arrived  7.30ish to hear Phil Dunn's last half hour which was the usual excellence and was getting the people up already with a decent number of people in so early in the night.  Robbo up next and you get the usual Robbo magic, mid tempo, beat ballads and dancers that kept the floor full.  Tony Mac was up next and was playing a great varied set but unfortunately we didn't get to hear all his set as we went to Keele......to be honest I wish I'd stayed at the Ukrainian 😔

Nice to see Derek smartly dressed as well and his carer Big Mick...top man love the guy.  Good to see Alison Nolan out and about as well, Rowena, Steve, Ken B and the usual faces.

Can't make the next one unfortunately as my shifts fall wrong but holiday going in for November 😉

Spot on Mick with your review. Every month we think it won’t be as good as last time, but it certainly is!! Think that has to be my best night yet!! Well worth paying an extra £69 to come back from our holiday in Tenerife 2 nights earlier so as not to miss it 🤭

All spots were AWESOME but have to agree with Mick, Tony Mac’s spot stood out for me 👏🏼 👏🏼 I did warn him not to play all my favourites as I’ve got a dodgy knee, alas that fell on deaf 🧏‍♂️ ears and today I’m suffering 😔but was definitely worth it!!
Hats 🎩 off to Chris Churm & Co. for keeping this fantastic soul Club running. Already looking forward to next month….

Wow what another cracking night.  I knew there would be a bonus of Sunday matches for me and no fixtures getting in the way of me attending.  Busy after the slight lull in August due to folk on holiday but everyone made up for it. Top drawer sounds and something for everyone. Thanks again to the promoters, dj,s and not forgetting the lovely ladies that keep the customers happy with the refreshments.

See you next month x

Ashton Ukrainian Club September 17th WOW!! Running out of superlatives for this great little club. It just gets better every month!!

Phil Dunn started the night off with a nice mix of classic rare soul. That man Robbo up next, he came, he saw, he delivered in spades. Starting off in beat ballad heaven George Freeman "down and out" Jack Montgomery "don't turn your back on me", fire lit with the dancers and we were off, too many gems to mention, top drawer sir!!

Tony Mac followed and for me personally played the spot of the night. In fact it was Tony who got me back on this musical journey 89/90 at a local do in not so sunny Heywood British Legion I think, which re-ignited the spark. A few recent acquisitions hit the spot, Otis Lee, Falcons and many many more, great mix of styles and tempos, take a bow mate.

Gibby and Colin Wood or was it John Hillel lol Johnny slipmat you have serious competition lol .Joking aside really enjoyable 90 mins double decking. Wilson Williams the tune of the spot. We even had Matthew Simpson dancing to a James Brown record!!

The maestro Mr Chris Churm rounded the last 30 mins in style, with one of my all time favourite enders to finish a great night. The Dells "make sure" pure goose bumps!! Lots more new faces once again and another full house, just WOW!!

Check out the events page on here and soul-source for details of the October Event, when we welcome back Ted Massey and Welsh Wizzard Steve Thomas, can't wait!!!
