About The Event

The return of the Ashton Ukrainian continues into 2022 and we're hoping for another great installment.

If you haven't been before here's a potted history from our very own Chris Churm:

The club was originally based at the  Dukinfield Masonic hall, starting well in January 2017  attended by around 100 guests. Resident DJs were Brian Lester, Chris Churm and Chris Penn.

The venue was great with a large dance floor  and ran until May 2017 when it moved to the Ukrainian Club, a slightly smaller venue (capacity 130) perfect the type of night we were trying to run delivering a mix of lesser known, rare and under played soul; a bit of everything.

The  first date  was June 2017 and was a  great night musically. January 2020 was the 3rd anniversary with guests Phil wainwright and Alex Jones,  respected collector/ DJs to entertain us with their fantastic collections and they were superb, and it was one of our best nights.

Following that in Feb 2020  Les Harrison (one of our regular DJs) and Geoff Stubbs of Stockport were our guests and were excellent as usual .

I must  thank Les Harrison and sue  who were at our first night in 2017 and have only missed the odd one when he has been booked to DJ at Culcheth and our dates unfortunately clashed . He has also helped us to sort the gremlins in the sound system on a few occasions.

Sadly  Brian Lester  who used to play some great tracks decided to bow out from the scene  and our other original DJ maestro Chris Penn moved to the  north east, he  will be missed ,but he has assured us he will be back to annoy us from time to time to DJ for us. .

Here is a list of some of the guys and girls that have played for us and have all taken part in the spirit of our humble Ukrainian club soul evening.

Carl and Maria Willingham, John Hillel, Dave Hall, Chris Penn, Brian Lester, Les Harrison, Derek Watmough, Ian Cunliffe,  Dave Beech, Carol Burgess, Simon Ingham, Mick Howard, Carol-Ann McCarthy, Geoff Stubbs, Geoff Buckley, Tom Dacey, John Baggaley, Dave Flynn, Les Hare, Mark Tobin, Ged Gibbons and Phil Etchells  (sorry if I missed anyone).

As we all know  in March  2020 (just as our guests  Simon Ingham and Mick Howard  were ready to  DJ for us) the pandemic struck and everything stopped but the restart will pick up where we left off and  Simon alongside Mick will be our first guests, hopefully we can bounce back .

Post pandemic the club have informed us that for the night to continue it will have to be a Saturday night event, ironically that is what we first wanted and we think could be better for everyone so keep an eye on the soul source calendar for future instalments.

We hope everyone is well and can’t wait to see you all again.

Sounded the business on that big old system at Culcheth, not forgetting the flip "it will be done" which had spins at the Casino and the guy who was responsible for the UK release on Cream Mr Rick Cooper is also a regular at The Ukrainian Club, wonder if he has any background on the release?

Spoke to Rick Cooper and he provided a fascinating insight people may or may not know Rick was the man responsible for the UK Cream Label in the mid 70s which released James Fountain Four Perfections and many more. We asked about the Eddie Carlton "it will be done" release which doesn't have "misery" on the flip, instead an instrumental of "it will be done" on the flip as the Swan tapes they had at Global records where Rick worked, included instrumental versions , which were a big thing at the time at places like Wigan Casino and "Misery" was not considered anything special at that time(how tastes change)

They were lucky enough to find a machine owned by an ex BBC sound engineer and were able to convert the tapes to vinyl . A Piece of soul history I knew nothing about and hats off to Rick for being kind enough to share with me and Simon. I'm sure we won't be hearing the instrumental to "Misery" on the 19th will we Simon?? haha

Cracking mover from Johnny Guitar Watson - his only recording on JOWAT which looks like a play on his name?

Some further research required methinks - unless anyone can shed some light on it????

It is his label, its also his publishing company

Thanks for the additional info on Rick Cooper and Swan records. Remember my early days buying records when they issued "The Spy" Guys from Uncle massive at the time, as we said earlier how times and tastes change!!

Maybe some 70s to weave into the set - there's been some quality 70s & crossover played this year to mix in with the top class 60s, something for everyone at the Ukrainian including the DJs digging deep to give us the underplayed and overlooked as well

This is like a review of records I used to own. I had the LP with the original? version of "we gotta keep on" and "tonight I'm gonna see my baby" Freddie Hughes was one half of the cassanova II,as you probably know?

In keeping with the ethos of the event, quality tracks that don't cost a fortune rub shoulders with the big money rare stuff and the dancefloor love it !!
