Myself, Pete and Linda run the event with our aim to bring different quality dj's each month to keep it real, fresh and different. Thanks for your support and I will send you Ronnies contact details
Stretfordender 206 Posted February 15, 2022 Always better to post feedback from an attendee rather than as a promoter. This from Geoff Green. When I read on Soul Source that Ted Massey was appearing at the Spitfire Soul Club in Farnworth I thought it worth a visit as I knew I'd hear some of the soul music I really like. Sandra Green too was keen to go. We got there at about 2.10 and the room was already very busy, luckily we did get seats. The first DJ was Vance Butterworth, one of the regular DJs there, he played a good mix of Northern, Modern and R&B, the latter getting Sandy on the dance floor. Next up was Ronnie Hanley, I had never heard of him but he was good, playing some generally fast records, might have been a bit of a challenge to me to dance to them. I didn't know most of his set, that makes things interesting, don't want to know every record that you hear. Derek Whatmough who followed Ronnie is a local Bury DJ. He did a very good set including quite a few medium tempo Crossover tracks. As is often the case I heard a particular favourite as I returned to my seat after going to the toilet, this time it was 100 Wonders by the TSU Toronadoes. Vance then did a 30 minute set, then Ted took to the decks. First track was Royal Texas Slim Bell's Sweet Little Girl, that got me out of my seat, and so it went on, a mix of tempos with His True Love For You and Foolish Girl, my request, then speeding up gradually with She's Gone, Joseph Webster's My Love Is So Strong and then United Sounds' It's All Over (Baby). I had to have a rest after that lot, then the opening bars of Beside Myself by Pee Wee, Shucks & Huey brought me to my feet. One of my all-time favourites that I have to dance to. Ted slowed things down with I Just Can't Speak and ended his set with Count The Days and I Won't Be Coming Back by J D Bryant. A great set that made me feel I was at an all nighter, just the soul music I want and need to hear. For the last 90 minutes Pete Eccles took over and again really mixed up the tunes, he said he was playing records that he'd not played for ages: Hush Don't Cry, Stolen Hours, Good News, etc. Very nice. We left at about 7.45, very happy and satisfied with our afternoon. Sandy seemed to know nearly everyone there which I suppose isn't surprising, for me it was good to catch up with Ted, Nige Brown and Elaine Sawetz. It was a very friendly crowd and I'm beginning to get to know people here. The Spitfire Club is now on our list of soul events that we don't want to miss. Thanks to the organisers and the DJs. 2
