Spirit of the Orwell at Haydock Park Golf Club November 27th 2021 – Update

Glad to report that tickets for the ‘Spirit of The Orwell’ night have been going out like hot cakes since the announcement of the appearance of special guest, DJ BUTCH was confirmed. BUTCH recognised as the rare soul scenes’ No1 DJ, will be making his annual trip to the North-West, to play a TWO HOUR set for the crowd at Haydock Park.

The last time BUTCH was at Haydock Park was November 2019 and what a night that was. Along with the Orwell DJ team, Steve Plumb, Brian ‘Flanny’ Flanders, Steve Connor and Baz Maleedy, the crowd were treated to a masterclass of rare 70’s & 80's, crossover and quality 60’s soul.

Anticipation for the night is high with many ‘new’ faces having already bought tickets. So, this is a shout to all the regulars, who join us on this special, annual rare soul night to get your tickets ASAP, as there are only a few left.

Don’t Miss This Great Night Out, in superb surroundings, just off the M6 at Junction 23 (see Flyer for More Details)

DJ BUTCH at Haydock Park UPDATE

Please be aware that the ticket allocation for the ‘Spirit of the Orwell’ event at the luxurious Haydock Park Golf Club has now SOLD. We ask that if you have made a verbal request to reserve tickets that you confirm verbal reservations with Steve Plumb or Baz Maleedy through normal channels, as these last tickets are now in-demand and due to managing the numbers to maintain a degree of COVID safety, it is likely admission will be by ticket only.

Sooooooo looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. I think the mouth-watering thought of listening and dancing to BUTCH playing a TWO HOUR set full of 60's, 70's & 80's Rare Soul goodies is such an attraction, that we are now SOLD OUT. I just wanted to point out a few things for tomorrow-

Start time is 8pm (not earlier as our original flyer stated) End time is 1.30am with 1am being last orders at the bar.

Directions - Sat Nav's should sort you out but remember when come off at M6 J23 and head towards Manchester on the A580 you will need to whizz round the first roundabout you come to and head back on the A580 for a few 100 yeards before turning left. That's caught a few out over the years

Covid - PLEASE could we politely ask everyone to take a test before coming tomorrow. No need for any sermons, we all know it makes sense to protect us all. We will have santiser everywhere and please respect anyone who has a mask on, or anyone who wants to fist pump you, rather than french kiss you LOL

Anyone want any other info - please shout up?

See you on the dance floor for our next installment of 'Spirit of The Orwell' xxxxx

Sod's Law, we all stay well and steer clear from covid and a fooking storm comes in and tries to stop folks from Scotland, North East, The Lake District and Yorkshire from attending tonight. Hopefully most will still be able to get here, as once here the weather is OK and improving throughout the night in those areas for getting back. However, we've had a couple of casualities BUT 'every cloud' and all that means we now have a few spare tickets. Anyone fancying coming tonight, we may be able to fit you in? Please drop me a PM thru Facebook or email sales@soulmusic.co.uk and we can hopefully arrange a 'pay on the door' thang? Please don't turn up 'on spec' though as it's likey these spare tickets will be taken? Cheers Steve

I dont think Rob Haigh wil mind me 'nicking' his Social Media revue of last nights proceedings but just about sums it up IMHO...Thanks Rob

Great night again!, its enforced absense from the calendar, like everything else over this past/almost two years, hasnt dulled the senses...so much so, id say its on everyone's to do list next year as well...expect tickets to fly out once on sale.

The timing couldnt have been better either, in between two snow storms, the latter of which is occuring just now...back home safely thankyou!.

So many familiar faces, all enjoying and soaking up the atmosphere, there were more djs watching, socializing, drinking and dancing than the lads who actually played! a sure sign this is a seriously premier event.

Such a refreshing change from the norm, hearing tunes that arent instantly recognizable..or total unknowns anyway...In abundance for sure and culminating in the yearly sermon from the master of rare soul, Butch....2 hours on another planet or cloud, or higher plain.

And top drawer crossover contributions from the guys who put it all together, Steve Plumb , Steve Connor, Brian Flanny Flanders and Tsop Manchester Baz Maleedy.....and a cracking sound system too!.

Pardon the pun: By George.....the Orwell does it again!

Two years since we last got together at the Haydock Park Golf Club for the Spirit of the Orwell, for me one of the highlights of my soul year. I never got to the original Orwell night in Wigan and this is a worthy substitute I think.

A bitter winter's day, and a tricky journey for both myself, and for Dave Swift who joined me from London. But we got to our hotel and a cab took us to the venue. We were one of the first people in, thus able easily to get a seat.

The night officially started at 8pm, one of the first records played was I'm Gonna Paint A Picture, by Jerry Jackson, the flipside of It's Rough Out There, great doublesider that, two superb beat ballads.

The four original Orwell DJs did the first two hours before Butch, a really good mix of soul music from the 60s and 70s, from slow to up-tempo. As usual the day after a soul night my mind is fairly blank when trying to recall what was played, I just know I enjoyed the music.

Butch came on at 10pm for a two hour set, covering all genres of our music. He included Northern Soul 100 Club favourites like Martha Jean Love's Old Time Lover cover up, that had both Arthur Fenn and myself rushing to the dance floor, and Butch followed it with Sandy Golden's Your Love Is Everything, what can one say? And on the Modern Soul side he included Luther Davis Group's You Can Be A Star, J Haymond's Kiss Me Girl On Your Way Out and Annette Poindexter's Wayward Dream plus of course loads of others. Loved hearing and dancing to There Was A Time by Joe Burrell, formerly covered up as Our Love Is Dying, one of my favourites from Scenesville days. Of course there were quite a few I didn't know and that is what you expect and wish to hear. Great set as usual.

But the music was excellent all night. When Butch finished Steve and the other guys took us through to 1.30 and kept us entertained and many on the dance floor.

It was good to see friends there and have a good chat. I'd seen Arthur and Maria the previous week at Boomerang but hadn't had time to have much of a talk, so really good to do that last night.

Matt and Fay were at Boomerang and it was good to see them last night. And particular thanks to them for giving Dave and myself a lift back to our hotel, it seemed all cabs were booked so we could have been in difficulties, it was a very cold night.

Thanks to all the DJs for a great night, and to all who helped putting it on, etc. I look forward to more of these, always nice to hear a wide selection of styles of our music.

Geoff, thanks for a great review, glad to see you enjoyed the night, your feedback is much appreciated...looking forward to doing all again in 2022

Best regards

Baz
