But the Nashville-born singer spent the final years of his life thousands of miles from the Motown heartland of Detroit.

He died in Chilwell - on the outskirts of Nottingham - in 2003.

A decade later, Starr's younger brother Angelo Starr and manager Lilian Kyle look back on his life and chart his unusual journey to the English suburbs.

and how nice is that from the beeb....

Brilliant mate, thanks for sharing that. A fantastic artist - one of the best in my opinion, a super vocalist.

He's buried in the same cemetery as my dear mum - I can imagine his voice whispering through the trees, down the hilly cemetery. Me mum would like that.

Great post thanks...

My wife and i were so lucky to have met up with Edwin & Jean for a meal he insisted on paying, he shared with us how he made some of his records, one thing that stuck with me was, Edwin always wanted to get a still of a clip from the movie Shaft, It was where Richard Rountree was walking in Harlem as he passed under the Appolo the featured artist of the night was visable it was Edwin Starr, well i managed to get this for him but it was too late he had passed away, i was so gutted, i gave it to Jean and i still have a copy,
