New Releases - Spring 2019

New Releases - Spring 2019 magazine cover

Hard to keep up at times...

a new topic for new releases 2019

THE SURE FIRE SOUL ENSEMBLE feat. KELLY FINNIGAN

Single out 3/20/19

“Impeach The President”, originally released in 1973 by The Honey Drippers as a protest song advocating for the impeachment of Richard Nixon became more famous for its drum breaks than the song itself… sampled in over 700 songs (according to Whosampled.com). Fast forward to 2019 with our country as divided as ever and this song’s anthem as relevant as ever. So with Jake Najor on drums, Kelly Finnigan on vocals, and San Diego’s The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble holding it down, Colemine Records is proud to present “Impeach The President”!!

Good shout Mike..so many releases this year so far and long may it continue.

Funk Night Records continue to churn out some decent new/old sounding 45s too:

Available to buy in Europe? Shipping from the States is waaaay to expensive

Dusty Groove records (US) have economy shipping as an option I think, not expensive at all, but I don't know if they are stocking it, maybe contact them?

Thanks, I'll check them out. A European source would, of course, be more cost effective.

New Lady Wray 45 from Big Crown records out soon and sounds good to me both sides. Pre-order directly or through their page on Bandcamp👍

Fabulous voice. I wondered why she had been quite, she gave birth last year! These two tracks recorded prior to the event.  Hope there is another Lp forthcoming as the last was great.

interesting release just out on Outta Sight records, first time on 45 and never heard of the Valerie Simpson demo before

"...our OVO… “Are You Trying To Get Rid Of Me Baby”. This storming unreleased dancer first came to our attention courtesy of Kent Records and their 1986 Magic Touch album. The song was originally known by the Crystals on U.A. which has grown in popularity and value in recent times.

VALERIE SIMPSON is better known as one half of music bis. royalty Ashford & Simpson who need little introduction. She co-wrote our topside and “Mr Creator” which she demos here to great effect."

Japan release for RSD, very nice high revs & uptempo modern soul number, not cheap for a new release but well worth it imo, sound clips and record for sale on Juno

Arrived today. Both sides sound great. Sam's voiceover towards the end of 'What's it gonna be' comes in rather loudly and then the whole track fades out to end, but it doesn't detract from a superb tune (well, two of course) from a masterful lyricist and singer.

Yes, now you come to mention it is very reminiscent of the 'Wounded Woman' LP, especially the arrangement /piano. First time I heard it, I thought it was Aretha, tho..!

This. Out on 7' for the first ever time, I believe. They also issued the LP for Record Store Day. Neither to much interest so far as far as I can tell. But what an utterly fantastic sound (and I believe the 7 is the one that may eventually become sought after). Can you get a better newly released single for a tenner?

These are numbered, how many is the run??

Great track btw 👍

I don't know. I got the 7 which is just a general release. Then the LP came out for record shop day, I suppose that would be the numbered one. Can't imagine they did a huge run of either.  Bit odd releasing it both ways as I am not sure if it's all that well known but great to have for the first time on a 7 rather than a repress of the LP! I think I heard / read Shirley herself is involved somehow in the release.

new 45 record

this is one for lovers of the more modern, jazz funky disco stuff - only 200 pressed so will be rare

"Only 200 copies Hand Numbered, and Cover Art Hand made by parisian artist Didier Clain ! !"

which is reason enough to get it 🙂

sadly no video or sound file available to post here, get on over to Bandcamp to listen to it

One of the best recent releases imo . Ltd press ‘White’ originals (released March 2019?) shooting up in price , plenty of ‘yellow’ represses at sub £10 tho .

This one has been about for a few years but now out on (limited) vinyl for the first time, I think? Massive.

What I don't get about this is, why has it suddenly become good just because it's been released on a 45 several years after the original CD was released?

Re-read my original message. And don't be so patronising. I'm guessing that some people who are into northern / rare soul like vinyl 7s....

I don’t he is being patronising and he does have a point, most on these topics are simply not interested in these records until they have had a vinyl release, not everyone btw but the majority.  Hardly anyone was interested in Ernest Ernie when it was just a download, the same for Kindred The Family Soul, hardly anyone on the northern scene is interested in a cd or download.

Yes indeed but we all know about downloads, etc already. If I hear a new track I like, first thing I do is look if it's out on vinyl. I know it's backwards but like most on here, I suspect, I'm a record collector / child of the 60s / 70s and while I might like something that's only available that way, I am never ever gonna get excited about downloading a download.  Buying a 7 on the other hand....

 😂 All the best.

No I wasn't and it wasn't a personal dig at Joe Soap. There's lots of people who have only picked up on thiis track, released in 2014, recently because it came out on a 45. It's as if you could pick any one of 100 great tracks relessed this decade and they would become popular despite being ignored, cheap and readily available since their release. If you like this stuff, wouldn't it better to strech beyond vinyl and just seek out the music?

maybe people do, I listen to music on Spotify, Mixcloud shows, Bandcamp etc plus still buy CD's (lots of tracks CD only) - but it's nice to get the vinyl if it gets released as a 45

vinyl just sounds better to me than a digital file

I remember Grace Love being a 100 copy only record and some ignored it, then it blew up...

Here is another 100 copy only record, this time a very limited release LP in yellow vinyl. Great R&B sound.

reading the blurb closely they have made a limited run of 100 yellow vinyl LP's for sale on Bandcamp and at their concerts, effectively a promo LP

can't see where we can buy the regular black vinyl right now, that comes later I think (May 24th)

Juno has the regular one as 'forthcoming'

There is no link yet for the black vinyl but they say it will be coming.

I don’t quite get the hype or fascination behind some of these European so called soul acts.  This as with others appears to be another release for me that seems to be more about the rarity and the colour than the quality.  Yeah its not a bad Lp, well the two tracks I’ve heard but you only have to look who is behind the production and wonder who it is aimed at.

I’d sooner spend that kinda money on a decent 60s or 70s Lp, there is at the end of the day no comparison.

Liking that a lot but can't find much info on it other than saying it's not released until June 20th. My birthday if anyone's stuck for a pressie 🙂
