Candi Staton - The Complete Fame Records Recordings - Kent Cd

Candi Staton - The Complete Fame Records Recordings - Kent Cd magazine cover

Candi Staton The Complete Fame Records Recordings

And so it begins, for the past five years Ace and Kent have been working towards a deal with Rick Hall's Fame Records and studio to release their catalogue, whilst for the past year we have been working in the Muscle Shoals studio transferring masters. This will result in a series of astounding releases the first of which is Candi Staton: The Complete Fame Recordings.

This includes all 48 tracks that she recorded for Fame Records between late 1968 and early 1974 when she signed to Warner Brothers. 22 of these tracks have never been CD before, and of those 12 are previously unreleased. These include the indemand dancer 'One More Hurt', 'Do Right Man' an insanely good slice of southern sister funk and her take on Donnie Fritt's 'We Had It All', which is southern soul at its very deepest.

It comes with a stunning 20 page booklet full of previously unseen photos and rare European picture sleeves.

One Of Fames finest stars and I know that it has taken a long time for anyone to get a crack at putting out the catalogue. Well done Dean and Tony I look forward to it.

I assume the booklet features pictures of the EP sleeves for her Japanese releases of Fame material!?

...It's a CD, Flynny, not an art gallery!laugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.gif:yes:

Seriously, Dean, Alec and I scanned so many previously unseen pictures of Candi from the Fame photo archives that it was hard finding room for Dean's fine essay, never mind about Japanese picture sleeves. But as always with an Ace/Kent title, there are plenty of lovely labels to look at and - through the courtesies of our most excellent pal, Harry Van Vliet of 'Fingerpoppin' Soul' fame - a bunch of rare European pic sleeve 45s, too.

Of course, I'm sure that Dean will agree with me when I say that all this pales when placed alongside the incredible music. within...

Shame her finest (Unity) release can't be included.

Rarest? Yes....

...Finest? Never in one bo-dillion years.

I'm afriaid that you are confusing rarity with quality, sir. 'Now you've Got The Upper Hand' is barely fit to be mentioned in the same breath as things like 'How Can I Put Out The Flame', 'For You', 'Too Hurt To Cry' and 'One More Hurt'.

It might fill a dancefloor but - well, let's just say that it's not surprising that Candi used to deny that it was actually her singing...

Ain't that the truth!

Wholeheartedly agree, "Upper Hand" pales into insignificance in comparison to the tracks you mention and others. I enjoyed Upper Hand when I was much, much younger sprog on the Northern scene but really it's a poppy Northern dance track whereas much of her Fame stuff is quality SOUL music. I'm sure she feels "Upper Hand" is an embarrasment which I cottoned onto when I saw her at Peterborough a couple of years ago, she sang Upper Hand for no longer than 6 seconds then she was back to the real stuff.

But hey, we all have different ears and different opinions. I suppose no record is good or bad, only how different folks hear it.

Well done Ace / Kent, Dean, Tony and all involved.

This is a superb and long awaited compilation from one of Soul Music's finest voices, recorded during her richest period.

Apart from all those marvellous numbers that we all know and love, the unreleased tracks are simply STUNNING and up there with her very best recordings.

Obviously the now indemand 'One More Hurt' is included - a crossover dancer of mammoth proportions which has been doing serious damage on dancefloors up and down the country for the past 12 months and is surely poised to go on to legendary status - but I'm slayed by the quality and soulfulness of the entire collection, in particular 'Loving The Easy Way' which is just about as deep and moody as Southern Soul music gets.

This is one essential purchase folks and if you consider yourself a lover or a fan of Real Soul Music you MUST get the Complete Fame Records Masters.

Breathtakingly magnificent.

Look forward to this release and the other Fame related releases Kent produce.

Got to agree with Sean about Candi having one of the great voices in Soul Music, and again it being an essential purchase.

Well done all concerned.

Can't be because it was released without permission in the first place.

Absolutely Disagree!

In terms of anthemnic unforgettable Northern Soul NYGTUH is absolutely up there. It does not deserve to be rubbished like this.

Like I said mate, we all have different ears and different opinions. You reckon "Upper Hand" is "anthemnic unforgettable Northern Soul" and I reckon it's an ok Northern track, not bad but not great. It certainly wouldn't bother me in the slightest if I never heard it again, something I can't say about a lot of her Fame material.

She's one of my favourite soul singers of all time with her Fame output IMO at the top of the soul tree and I've been eagerly awaiting this release since it was first mentioned.

I'd also like to congratulate the guys at Ace/Kent for their XL/SOM, Goldwax releases. Also the Jimmy Hughes, Swamp Dogg and many other Southern Soul related have been a joy to listen to, bringing some happiness to an old embittered soul fan.

I thought my Candi Staton Fame CD craving's were satisfied when the the Honest John CD came out in 2004, but this takes it to another level. I look forward to getting this and the other gems from the vaults of Rick Hall.

Apart from the great songs and musicians, Candi's unique voice has a wonderful homely feel to it.

It's very easy to get addicted to it.

And as this thread slips down the page at some pace, stride for stride Candi and Gloria Scott are a vocal match. Listen too the once indemand and now overplayed Gloria Scott - Just As Long As Where Together ( Gene Page Produced ). IMHO there neck and neck.

Good review in the Daily Express on Friday along with the other Ace offering 'Black America Sings Lennon & Mccartney' which includes the often overlooked version of Yesterday by Linda Jones (not on the Loma album). Well done Ace!

Am I the only one in the world still not got this, why are Amazon still showing as pending if you lot all have your grubby paws on it

It says released tomorrow, if I don't get it within 2 hours of ordering, I will hold Mr Rounce and Mr Croasdell personally responsible for my mental distress. I have not had this level of anticipation causing such an aural erection for many a year.

And havent even bothered guffawing out loudly at the comment on why is her Northern biggie on this, just unbelievable!

CMON Kent, I need it.

Hello Jocko,

I'd bought mine in advance from eBay seller boogaloo161 (Roger) so it was shipped as soon as he received stock.

Good price and free shipping, I often buy CDs from him.

I'd wait till it is officially released then get a cheaper copy in the new and used section on amazon. I usually get mine from cheapcddvds or similar shop name, usually a few quid cheaper, they are brand new still sealed btw.

Can only endorse everything you said Paul. Like yourself I've bought from Roger before, always been pleased with his price and service so he got my biz once again. Bought and paid for mine late in the day at 16.45 when most sellers seem to think "fook it, I'll sort it tomorrow". It arrived next morning at circa 10am, an amazing 17hrs later.

Highly recommended seller.

Like you guys, I've bought mine from Roger Stewart as well. As you've both said he's reasonably priced and delivers a good service. Soon as I paid, got a mail saying its in the post. Just waiting for the postie to pop it through the letter box. So far for me, this is the CD release of the year.:)

My copy's just popped through the door and oh the wait was worth it.

Apart from the unreleased stuff already mentioned they're all great, well Jolene not so much. ohmy.gif (Then again, I didn't like James Carr's unreleased version of Ring of Fire either, both the original country versions IMO were better, but I do like Stand By Your Man). When I saw the tracklisting included a version of Trouble, Hearaches and Sadness, I wondered how it would stand up as its one of my favourite Ann Peebles/Hi releases, but its compares really well.

Another one that hit me straight away was Are You Just Building Me Up, smoother that her other Fame recordings, but just as good. A great swing your pants record.....

My guess it's some knobhead who's read the words "The Complete" and complained to Amazon it's not got "Young Hearts Run Free" or "Upper Hand" on it. :hatsoff2:

The fact it say's "The Complete Fame Records Masters" would be lost on 'em.

----------

Edited to say Amazon had put the item on hold awaiting review as they'd had a complaint from a buyer who received the item and the content wasn't as described. It looks like it's been sorted as everything now seems to be hunky dory.

I forgot about this, thanks for the tips about Roger on ebay,. used to buy all my Kent off him via his website so glad to see he is still there, yes a bit dearer than Amazon but worth it to kepp the source going and for the great service.

Oh yes, the CD, f*****g amazing, sorry for offending all those faint hurts on SS who don't run free and are obviously offended by swearing, but sometimes the end justifies the means......

Only listened to it twice as most of my listening in car or while under the influence of my latest gin injection, this deserves a darkened room, an expensive brandy, no computer or TV, just me and Candi, getting down and dirty,

Genuinely the CD of the century. I love it. Back with more after my session with Candi

One confession, I had previously missed her version of Blackmail, couldn't believe it was on one of the LP's I had, great version and was straight on decks for EMS weekender, sounding amazing!

Today I received an apology from Tony for comments made on this topic directed at myself. Of course I accepted the apology and made one of my own for any comments I made he may have taken offence at. Both his post and my reply have been removed. As far as we are both concerned that is the end of the matter and we can continue with no animosity or ill feeling towards each other. Tony does have my utmost respect, as a person, for his knowledge and the work he does at Ace/Kent.

Should point out that this cover was designed in Japan by Ace's Japanese distributor, before anyone thinks they were short changed at this end and starts writing into Ace Towers with 'Oi where's my sleeve' letters.

We didn't have any, we're not going to have any, and the sleeve is exclusive to copies sold in Japan by the aforementioned local distributor...
