Top Tips For 2011

Top Tips For 2011 magazine cover

Hi all,

Well, its that time of year again thumbsup.gif

Exactly 12 months since we did the last 'Top Tips' thread... so, as it's now a Soul Source tradition, here we go again!

Here's your opportunity to tip the tunes in your box for future greatness, during the forthcoming year... or simply list any number of records that you'd like to recommend to other Soul Sourcers.

You might be a DJ with that tasty unplayed, unknown, hardly played or semi-known 45 stuck in the back of your box that you'd love to play out... but haven't quite got around to it... yet!

You might be a collector, sitting on a tune that you know, if it got into the right hands, could become massive in the next 12 months.

It could be an LP track that, for whatever reason, has never been given the recognition it deserves.

It might be a tasty 'B' side that, given the right exposure, might just have what it takes to become a monster!

We're talking, Northern, Modern, Crossover or 'Just Soul' biggrin.gif Whatever floats your boat!

No need to post sound clips. Just let us know what you've got that you think deserves a really big plug in the coming year!

So come on. Look at your box and let's have your top tip (or tips) for 2011.

Oh... and a Happy (and Soulful) New Year to all!

Valiants Walkin' girl Ensign....( right from the off this latinesque shouter hits the spot).

Great record Mike. Also got a release on a major label, but cant remember which, as mine is one Ensign like yours.

i`d agree about this 7" has well, cracking tune The Esquires - Baba-Daba-Dop / Aint No Reason - B&G............................... (ignore the title!) two great tracks

I've got a feeling that 'aint no reason' is also the flipside of their Rocky Ridge release?

There other track:Girls in the city-The Esquires seems to get a few looking at the decks when played out has well. Still cheap to buy.

Here`s a few from me:

Love can be happy-E.K.O Top funky/modern dancer.

Hot foxy women-Christian Plicque. If you like Heaven is my weakness- Ray Villar, your love this.Nice jazzy/Modern dancer.

She`s the ideal girl-Jermaine Jackson.70`s modern dancer, getting asked to play this all the time now.You know it`s a tune when i played it at Monumental weekender and the picture cover /Sleeve went right right round to all the djs/collectors :D .

Happy new year everyone..

Great choices, when you tire of the Jermaine Jackson flip it over for the superbly subtle "Im so glad she chose me"...........two great sides

Always a risk on threads like this that you could mention a played out oldie as a tip for the future.

Here goes nothing... Here are three 'new to my ears' this year that i'd like to see get some main room attention next year.

Pauline and Bobby - No Messin Around - Lovely thumping uptempo RnB sounding duet in the style of Mr Clean and Show Some Sign

Bobby Banks - I'm A Batchelor - Fantastic gritty sound, reminds me a bit of Rod Keith, The Lord Said.

Shirley Caeser - Stand The Storm - Perfect sound for now, uptempo female gospel/funk sound. Absolutely brilliant.

Calvin Arnold - Lovely Way To Go - Blimey! This is fantastic, never heard it before this year, Pat Bleasdale play at Move On.

Happy New Year everybody :D

Calvin Arnold has been getting a fair amount of play over the last couple of years, great record  I used to play it at Solid Hit & Dave Abbott was giving it some spins here & there a while back. Sure others must have picked up on it

Springfield Rifle - That's all I really need - Burdette (Known by most but what about this as a left field Northern oldie in 2011?)

Seriously, I do know it's been played in the past but 2011 could be the year it gets wider exposure?

Actually the flip is the better Soul record imho but 'Can you win' is definitely a dancefloor winner!

top tips for 2011 ? out of all the records dave thorley played at my house on new years eve before we headed off for the venue I would guess about ten...but then I forgot five (balme the following allnighter) and I bet the others I am not allowed to tell.

Good to know how much brilliant stuff there still is to be found.

Think that's a very good point Marc. I'm actually amazed at how many new and 'previously unmentioned' tips have come through this year. :D

Bit surprised though that we've not had many LP tracks suggested.

There must be loads that folk are sitting on, especially now the scene has largely got over that '45 only' handicap.

Thinking caps on folks!

Let's have em!

If LPs are ok and Gospel is acceptable these days - how about a Gospel album track from Fontella's mum:

Martha Bass - Since I've been Born Again - Checker

I'll stick up a youtube clip for now but will record the track and replace with a refosoul clip later

:D Brilliant!

That's got it all for me, strong female vocal, pounding uptempo, a bit funky. Superb. Off to find a 45 of it (if there is one).

Glad you like it Matt. What a bass line eh! :D

Sean

off the same titled lp - Vernon Burch - " I'll be your sunshine"...may have tipped this past year...

..and one for the early doors / chill out / sunday sessions,,,Grover Mitchell - "Take your time and love me" on Decca.

(a nod to a good friend who put me onto this, and another who sold it me!!!).

Are you tryin' to say you have 2 friends!!!!!!

Can I slot another in Sean. Not my suggestion originally - JM's auction had a UK demo of Four Tops - Shake Me Wake Me, in the comments he mentioned how good the flip was and ready for picking up on. I know this a bit sheep-like of me, but heh-ho, I dug out a Us Motown Issue (must be bargain cheap still) and the flip is bloody great, but I'd forgotten about it. Genuinely could pick up plays this year.
