Northern In Dublin - Sleepless Nights Nov 2002

Big thanks to Danny for posting this in ..great stuff, informative , enjoyable , top dog!

Northern Soul in Dublin is still alive. Sleepless Nights has taken up the mantle and ensures our growing family meet at least monthly. Add 2 successful allniters and 2002 will reflect that the rot has stopped and better days might be round the corner for our City. Raining for last few days, a few emails and a Paul Davis phone call before 10am ask the question is it still on tonight, "course it is" I tell them all defiantly....hey better check that Doyles isnt under 2 feet of water as its only yards from the river Liffey. A quick phone call confirms that my spoofing is rewarded this time. Friday night dos mean Im hoping to finish work early, not always possible in the courier business and again tonight its a big rush, roads closed, ok I will drive in, only have 2 pints and drive home (great intentions) Some roads impassable I get there about 9.15 thankfully lads already there shifting tables, music on etc (thanks John, Karl, Ross, Brian)

Our first hour is a "free decks" slot, tonight Brian, johns brother plays a great intro/chill out set, ridding us of our tensions and getting everyone into a soul groove. Ross on only his 2nd dj slot ever officially starts things with some good xover. A "new" guy on the Dublin scene, Mike McNulty or Macca from Derby (MFD) turns up with some records and asks if we can play them later! Macca has been busy replacing the sounds he sold/mislaid over the years. We look at the cardboard packages posted from the US with mouths agape. Macca has just travelled back from somewhere in the middle east via Mayo where he now lives and booked a hotel in Dublin to be here tonight, we all spontaneously agree that we reduce our slots to 40 minutes and let Macca spin his own tunes. MFD wants to buy me a beer, I buy him one back... and the promise of only 2 pints goes straight out the window, I have a really low temptation level. MFD spins his sounds, some great oldies, the place is filling up and that feel good factor has hit us.

Next on flows Karl Mitchell one of the resident three, Pip follows (this guy like the night itself keeps improving). These fellas make my job easy and everyone is up and dancing to the x the board set. John Dunne as usual finishes the night in his own unique way. From his playlist you will see that Chaka Khans "Im every woman" features? Maybe not a purists choice but most of the people attending are only at their 1st, 2nd or 3rd Northern Night, and the odd "disco" track helps break down barriers. It is great to see these kids hear and dance so enthusiastically to Northern for the first time, something thats commented on by overseas soul brothers/sisters attending nights in Dublin. Our intention being that Northern is delivered in an enjoyable way. Not always (but usually) on the original label, re issues and the odd boot allowed (we dont have a cd player, big scene or easy access to vinyl) Already we see the spin off with new collectors and an increasing awareness of the music from the requests received, this in turn will raise standards.
