Lookback Monkey Friday 26 Aug 2005
Drunken Monkey - Friday 26 August
Started as a just quick off the cuff view and thanks on last nite, expanded now to include plays, info and more to be added as recieved
Second one at the new venue Old Hall at Llandudno, so here's my usual quick lookback on it. As always its from my viewpoint involved in organising it, so always gonna be slightly different view than others.
Night was another succesfull one, good sized crowd in, good buzz got going as nite moved on, and going by feedback recieved online and out and about mostgave it a thumbs up!
After move 40 miles of event deeper into the homeland, night it self never gonna be completely like the Springfield, while run with the same original attitude and commentment, time, changes and stuff do mean the event is always gonna be evolving, as we said at begining its all about dishing out exciting quality nites of rare soul, doing things right way and will continue as long as doing it is enjoyable!
Now have right old handy team of regulars, all with own taste and styles, which when mix in usual 1 or 2 top of the tree quality guests then add the local guy get it going spot to mix, reckon have tools to dish out a right old varied mix of quality stuff.
Playlists and info hopefully from all to follow, Got some plays in and added at end, along with some misc info from some
Hartley got things going with a great put together selection of quality interesting tunes
Steve Thomas did a early spot with a mix that shows why so busy at other events, doing his usual trick of dedicating most have asked if he wants to flog to me. Andy Killock on next for a 45 min voyage of quality, some great stuff from the only non-welsh dj in line up and watch out for his plays and info as be some interesting stuff, Chico next and after Andys voyage of discovery, went for a good time oldies spot which worked great, Phil Blacknell next and as was dragged off doing organising stuff and that didnt catch that much from his or Ritchie Andrew following spot was told good stuff, main guest up next and as said on blurb it was first time appearance as a dj at Monkey for Soul Sam and a welcome return to Llandudno as well. Was a well overdue appearance by North Wales very own legendary DJ and he certainly made the most of it, dishing out a great set proving that he is on fire at the moment. After that was up to Mark Speakman to stand up and follow the man and that he did, i got knocked down by stampede for margret little. Your man me finished the nite off with last 30 mins . Nite finshed to strains of come to me softly, and that was that
Crowd wise - good to see many familar faces make journey, few random memory based dodgy name checks, the man who many call the spirit of the monkey Joe Dunlop and all wxm gang, Karl and Debbie who brought Robbo and Stevie Catto with them, The Big Lock team, believe was some Greatstone rogues that missed (blame Steve), Chester duo reappearing, Jimmy and co from other side of river, Steve and Julie, Kit, Colin, Cel, Jean all the usual local and close by soul heads that make this event possible, and all rest must have missed
Vinyl wise - fair amount of boxes, Roger Banks rapidly turning into Monkey regular vinyl vendor, Sam had some very tempting vinyl, a lot of small boxes, was happy to get a lp been after for a bit
Thanks to all the djs and if can email plays and throw in any interestiong info or stories or such sure be appreciated. Playlists, info and highlights being added as recieved at end. Thanks to the door team, Sue and Dave, the bar staff, security and manager. Thanks to all who while may not showed do support the event in many ways, spreading the word, and so on. And most importantly thanks as always to all those who parted with hard cash on the door.
End view
Myself thought well up to last one, second one here, nite still evolving after the move of location, so maybe some tweaking, but own view is that now firm in new location and can crack on with enjoying soul music!
Reckon great that have a need to mention, the amount of co-operation, help and support shown from many similar events was as always appreciated, and great to see
Next one at old hall, planned for Oct and believe it or not it this should be the start of a more frequent regular run of events at this venue
Thanks Again

Andy Killick plays and info
a regular "guest" since early days, and has joined us on past monkey dj trips out. Banged on about him a fair bit in pre-match programme here's why......
In true monkey style, last night pushed out a newies feast!!
Six of the best were...
1. The Cliffhangers - Since You Been Away - C-Gea
First play anywhere. This chilling 60s midtempo monster has finally arrived and caused quite a stir. Set at a beautiful gliding pace, the echoing harmonies and lyrics make this an instant favoraite.
2. The Royal Imerials - My Heart is Hurting - Mellow Town
Where has this been! Once again a total unknown on a small label with a couple of other semi known releases. But wait, this is a northern soul cut of the highest quality mid-uptempo group dancer. Could this indeed be the Servicemen, certainly the arrangements and vocal suggest they just might be!
3. The Sheepherders - If Ever You Need Me - Sounds International
An incredibly obscure release on the label comes this uptempo track which is a very close comparison to The Nomads on Mogroove. Fronted by stunning vocals from Bubba Baily, with a consuming backing track that delivers seamless breaks. The thing about this track is that you hear it once and it just sticks with you!
4. Maurice Jackson - Its to Late Baby - Soulville
Yes, this is Maurice Jackson, but on a totally unrelated Soulville label it would appear! A simple yellow designed label simillar to that of the Deltours on Starville. This is a superb dead centre northern dancer that has it all. Why has it not been played before, probably rarity, but who cares its arrived now courtesy of The Monkey!
5. The Inconquerables - For Your Love - Flodavieur
From the same stable as The Antellects comes probably the rarest release on the label feauturing the Inconquerables, and a right northern belter it is. Gritty soulful lead vocalist, deep backing harmony, with a tight arrangement and the adrenaline just drips from your fingertips. There somthing about this track that sends echos of The Mello Souls to your spine, with more exposure this track could well be massive.
6. The Grey Imprint - Do You Get The Message - Clearhill
This last featured track in Andy Killicks set has received airplay from Shifty at the 100 club covered-up as Lou Pride. But with both Andy and Butch now playing it, this masterpiece could be set for the wide recognition it deserves. An unbelievable track and lyrics which really does capture the soul and feel of 60s black America. If you haven't heard this, you need to.
