Zoe Leone - A Soul Star In The Making

Zoe Leone - A Soul Star In The Making magazine cover

Having been ripped off on my previous attempts to fulfill a dream and make some northern soul I am hoping to fair a little better this time around. Last time I did this a "friend" in the UK made quite a bit from the Larry Hammond cuts and I never saw a penny of it. I did subsequently receive a couple of hundred quid from another person for a minidisc and gave half of it to Larry.

Well that was fifteen years ago and this time around I am intending to do it properly. I was introduced to Zoe Leone in Hong Kong by Bobby Taylor at Christmas 2011 at HK football club where he had invited her to sing two numbers as a support act. She sang Etta James' At Last and blew me and everyone in attendance completely away. This lovely young lady is originally from Teeside and sings in small jazz clubs and also appears in stage musicals which is her first love.

Zoe has recently appointed me to represent her interests for her recording career and I intend to make sure this charming young woman gets paid for her work.

Zoe recorded the two vocals in a professional studio in Kuala Lumpur last Friday 22nd February. I was not present. I had sent Zoe two records to hear to give her an idea of what I was looking for in terms of trying to get an authentic sixties feel and sound. They were Marjorie Black and Joy Lovejoy.

Nothing could have prepared me for what I heard on Saturday morning when I awoke to hear what Zoe had produced.

In my humble opinion we are witnessing a soul star in the making. Take a listen .....

I would be very interested in knowing how you go about promoting a new artist

to get them maximum exposure nowadays?

Please excuse my ignorance but I got the impression you will be cutting some acetates and selling them for quite a high fee ( in my humble opinion) far beyond my reach for sure  and as pointed out with added provision to protect the rights of the production.

What happens after the Dj's have basically marketed the product by playing it to the mass to generate interest and eventual sales I would assume ? Do you then intend to release the artists work to the general record buying public ( be it a relatively small market . I would guess the Cd market place would generate more revenue ?

If you don't mind my saying this is very different from the days of old when a record salesperson used to hammer a Dj's door down to get an artists work played/noticed , but then this is Y2K and things may be different ?

I have known others to give/feed their material to Dj's to aid the eventual sales of the singles.

Do you have to pay a royalty to the writer of the backing track ?

I am genuinely interested in the procedure.  :g:

She's got a great voice but why waste it on a crusty old backing track like that one?

I can think of a good Rod Keith backing track that would be enhanced by her voice  and its so under played everyone one would think it was a new release !

Thank you Pete. If all goes to plan there will be much more to come.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions Anais nin.

As I mentioned in my original post above I will be taking considerable care to do this right this time around and to ensure Zoe is rewarded for her efforts.
