Top Tips For 2015

Morning all,

Happy new year and apologies for being a bit later than usual getting this thread off the mark.

Got a bit more on me plate this year, even than usual!

It's 12 months since we did the last 'Top Tips' thread... and it's now a Soul Source tradition (this is the ninth, as it started in 2007) so here we go again!

Although we may be at risk of inferences that this thread only exists cos we've run out of things to play (me in particular :shhh::lol:  :P ) we'll give it another shot, shall we?

I'm sure if you're a Soul Fan we all enjoy and benefit from being made aware of something new!

And lord knows... some of you might well need to freshen up those playlists! :D So here's your opportunity to tip the tunes in your box for future greatness, during the forthcoming year... or simply list any number of records that you'd like to recommend to other Soul Sourcers.

You might be a DJ with that tasty unplayed, unknown, hardly played or semi-known 45 stuck in the back of your box that you'd love to play out... but haven't quite got around to it... yet!

You might not be a DJ, but a collector, sitting on a tune that you know, if it got into the right hands, it could become massive in the next 12 months.

The tune could be an LP track that, for whatever reason, has never been given the recognition it deserves.

It might be a tasty 'B' side that, given the right exposure, might just have what it takes to become a monster!

We're talking, Northern, Modern, Crossover or 'Just Soul' - Whatever floats your boat! With the increased diversity around these days, and lots of new folk getting into the music, this should be a really interesting list!

How about those funky groovers. Are they now providing a rich seam of new quality music that is trickling into the mainstram?

Are Firme Rolas and Lowrider Oldies doing it at your night?

How about the 'Carib Soul' material... is that finding it's way onto the Northern Playlists?

Is there a killer, long overlooked, track just ripe for a revival?

Have all the big 'crossover' tracks finally crossed over?

Or are the Top 500 Stompers still the only tunes that make it really happen on the dancefloor?

No need to post sound clips. Just let us know what you've got that you think deserves a really big plug in the coming year!

What I need from you please, to keep things tidy and stop me having to do hours of research to get the detail, is the following:

Artist - Title - Label

In that order please.

That's it.

You know the drill!

Cheers!

Not an unknown record by an means, but one i expect to get a much bigger profile in 2015.

Love, Warmth & Affection feat. Ralph Weeks - Talking 'bout love - Week-End

Same as above really, not unknown, but a rareity that has until recently seen most plays mainly in Europe, this dancefloor destroyer is set to take the UK by storm in 2015.

Point of View - I'm Superman - Instant

Good shout Russ, but to be big I think there has to be copies around ,so I'm gonna go for a cheapie and support a local girl who deserves all the publicity she gets ..

This one is readily available ,is a instant hit with the dancers in the main room of any night or weekender .

Not allnighter material though :)

Louise soultions from Newcastle !

Listen - SouLutions- (Drizabone Remix):

Good call Nev . Very popular on the main stream dance floors in 2014 and initially sold out of it's 1st ltd press - now had a re press I believe to address demand .

If DJ's aren't afraid to play some of the new releases featuring unreleased stuff then there is plenty to keep all-nighters fresh.

4 from the Onederful archives with more promised..

Sharpees - Take Me To You Leader

Otis Clay - Show Me What You Say

Ringleaders - Grin and Bare It/I've Got To Find My Baby

As said the Valdons 45's

Gene Washington & The Ironsides - Got To Get Through To You/Don't Throw Your Love Away has made waves the past few months

Ebony Diamonds - I'm So Lucky could do the same as well.

Some great previously unreleased soul been released the past few months.

Love going to venues where CD's / MP3s can also feature and make the most of some amazing previously unreleased dancers from last year including the likes of say:-

- Dee Dee Warwick "You tore my wall down" (The complete Atco recordings double CD)

- Julis Wright "I pray that things will change" (Kent CD "Brent...superb 60s Soul Sounds")

- Chuck Jackson  "Where did you go" (Kent CD "Satisfaction Guaranteed Motown Guys 1061-69")

- The Natural Resources "If there where no you" / Toussaint McCall "I'll laugh till I cry" (Kent CD "Dore L.A. Soul sides" then also on Kent Select 45)

- Dynamic Sounds Orchestra "Take me back" MP3 from their unreleased album (thanks again S.P.!)

Even better if more brand new releases like Soulutions can get an airing as already rightly mentioned...eg tracks like "L-O-V-E" from Shirma Rouse MP3 album released late last year just superb I think. The remixed Preston Shannon 45 "The way I Love you" that Soul Junction released last year just brilliant too and loads of others. Okay maybe not for a busy main room but certainly smaller rooms.

Here's to another great year of soul anyway  . Steve

Can vouch for Chuck Jackson (here also Four Tops version) and the Toussaint McCall tracks(aswell as the aforementioned Valdons) that you put on a marvellous CD for me Steve, some great stuff that we need to be checking out from all the contributers on this great thread

If only someone would get that Dee Dee Warwick track on a 45. I played it heavily on the radio show.

Yes i agree about the Chuck but i personally think Chuck's vocal is better but  overall the song is not as good as the Four Tops ( the backing on Chuck is not brilliant ) and with the Four Tops you have the bonus of Ask the lonely , but great to see the Chuck version get a release via Kent, who have a knack for releasing great music in a great way with a amazing attention to detail. ( thats got to be worth a christmas card next year from Ace )

Always look forwards to this thread each new year.
3 from me, one not out yet, one from last year that a lot of folks missed & an old u'n that fits into the Caribbean category that Sean mentioned.

The first one is from Bosq feat Nicole Willis called Bad For Me. I have been lucky enough to have had a promo of this that I got from the Whisky Barons since last summer & on the odd occasion that I have played it there has always been a lot of interest as most folks are surprised at how well they have got the old 'Blaxploitation' sound nailed. It's due out on vinyl at the end of February & I can see them getting snapped up pretty quickly.

https://www.ubiquityrecords.com/shop/products/Bosq-Feat.-Nicole-Willis-%252d-Bad-For-Me.html

The one from last year is by the Mighty Mocambos & if this isn't Funky then I don't know what is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9-2i8ibxEI

The last one is from 1970 & I might have posted it before but it's got to have it's day sooner or later & it's Owen Grey - I Am Satisfied. Only to be found tucked away on the B side of a UK Escort record & the A side is a very poor version of Young, Gifted & Black by Denzil & Jennifer so it's quite scarce. Also Owen Gray's name is spelled wrong & as this didn't get a release anywhere else might be another reason it didn't sell.

A couple I think are ripe for a revival are....

Jay Walkers - Can't Live Without You - SHIO

Debonaires - Headache In My Heart - SOLID HIT

Leon & The Metronomes - I'll Catch You On The Rebound - CARNIVAL

Don't get to many UK gigs these days so they might already have been revived

Cheers

Three re activated oldies from me , James Carr 'a losing game' and Robert Thomas 'salvation' (plus the Rita Lee and Cressida Watson versions) both of which had renewed interest and plays in main rooms in 2014 and would anticipate more so in 2015 , plus Betty Boo 'spellbound' which has been the subject of a separate thread on here . Finally an old mod tune which is getting continental spins again and will hopefully migrate to the uk dancefloors in 2015, Tony Brook with the Breakers 'meanie genie'

Love David Huff 'Mary Brown' as you know Ian - rarely off my turntable last year, though maybe not immediate or black enough for some

Couple from me worthy of more attention IMO, both on Jubilee:-

Jimmy Ricks - The long long arm of love

Don Gardner - I'm in such misery

So it looks as though we manage to get to 50!

Don't think I've ever seen such a varied list - from Tony Brook to the Winans - Such diversity probably represents the incredibly range of playlists and assortment of venues and tastes around these days!

The strictly 'on the fours' playlist seems to be a thing of the past.

Thanks for the contributions all.

Hi Andy,

I hope you're well mate.

Don't know if these are 'tips' that would have legs for many DJ's around, but here's just a few I've been playing pretty extensively this past few years that I'd love to see become wider accepted!

The Lovelles - Pretending Dear - Atco

Curtis Mayfield - Show Me Love - Curtom

Joe Hinton - Don't Tell Her The Truth - Dunhill

Soul Stirrers - Trying To Be Your Friend - Jewel

Smokey Robinson / Miracles - Don't Say Ypu Love Me - Tamla

O'Jays - Its Too Strong - Neptune

The Sapphires - I Found Out Too Late - Swan

Moody Scott - We've Got To Save It - 77

Hill Sisters - Oh My Love - Space

Dontells - Tell The World - VJ

Arthur Alexander - Stay By Me - Previously Unissued

Bobby Womack / Valentinos - I've Got Love For You - Previously Unissued

Sam Dees - Gimme A Little Action - Previously Unissued - Out this month!

Will add clips, if I find em!
