TCS Gospel RE-Mastered

TCS Records was active from 1972-1988 with 24 7” singles, 15 LP’s and 6 12’’s, but there were a number smaller labels with a handful of releases. Several acts, including the The Tony Carter Singers, The Gabriel Hardeman Delegation and Dawkins New Sound Choir recorded their first singles for TCS Records at Virtue Studio’s on North Broad St. As a new label TCS Records had a steady output of secular sounding gospel music that didn’t always fit in with the more traditional Philadelphia gospel scene. Eventually the DJ’s began to overlook the new TCS releases, frustrated however still determined, Mr Carter wondered how to get his records played on-air. His answer was to create new labels and even sometimes use aliases on the production credits. "Honestly I took a liking to the label design before even listening to the music, but the more 45's & LP’s I found, the more I listened, and the more I really dug the music. I began researching as much as possible. From what I can tell, TCS was the largest sole minority owned record label in Philadelphia in the seventies and early eighties. Tony Carter passed in 2013 at the age of 66. I found his widow and main artist on the label, Gwen Carter, who still lives in Philadelphia. 72 years young, super sweet, extremely funny, and full of knowledge, she and I hit it off after our first visit and we discussed revitalizing TCS. Through my work with Mrs. Carter, we unearthed about 80 master tapes, some multi-tracks, but mostly 1/4 inch mix-down tapes. Twenty or so of them are in really bad shape, and will need to be restored, transferred and then remastered. We are working with mastering engineer Peter Humphrys at MasterWork Studio as well as sound engineer John Smeltz at George Blood Audio for restoration and digital transfers. None of this amazing music has been released digitally until now."
