Strictly does Northern at Blackpool but looks strictly em magazine cover

Strictly ‘does’ Northern Soul at Blackpool this weekend , but  this trailer suggests it will be Strictly embarrassing and a missed opportunity . Im not ashamed to reveal myself as a regular viewer of SCD , which at its best is a celebration of dance , sparkle, fun,, and hopefully achievement . This trailer was aired on the BBC2 It Takes Two.., and  described by John Gilkinson Creative Choreography Director as :

“ a great opportunity to create a bit of a battle between the Ballroom dancers and the ‘Northern Souler’s’ . It looks like they have pulled in Levant  Mc Clean to suggest some credibility which it looks to lack on both music choice and dance style. A real missed opportunity by the BBC /SCD to fuse the countries weekly TV dance fest with some of us who have been embracing the power of dancing for years. Don’t shoot the messenger on this.

For those of you who are not Strictly viewers Id put in a case for you checking out the show for the superb orchestra of Dave Arch and his soulful singers. Tommy Blaize ,Lance Ellington, Andrea Grant and Hayley Sanderson pull out some fantastic covers over the years . Band leader Dave Arch is reported to have played piano in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and he continues to play jazz piano at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club with vocalist Madeline Bell.

So thats 2 weekends on the trot when the antics at Blackpool Tower have cast an almighty dark shadow on a once great scene.
Hang your heads in shame all those involved.

Typical twaddle from Martin Dixon

Firstly, the Weekender of Nov 10-12 was top notch with great DJs at a fantastic venue.

The Strictly involvement has nothing to do with the NS promoters or even Tower management. The BBC film at the venue once a year. They have chosen to focus on Northern. That is their prerogative and I repeat zero to do with us

When you have as many achievements as Richard and I, let me know, until then.........

I read on social media that the Northern bit ain't on tonight.. You have been duped as the BBC wanted to up the viewing figures.. You are all part of a scam ????

Not happy.  Didn't have any spare Betamax tapes so I had to record over Paul O'Grady, only to discover it wasn't on last night's show.  Damn you, BBC.

Folk on here seriously need to get out at the weekends...any media interpretation of the scene will always be bollocks, move on and just keep going out to the venues where the real deal is still happening...

For those of you who do not want the ignominy of going into work tomorrow, having watched Strictly, the couple that were eliminated were...... go to Strictly Spoiler for the results!!

Belittled once again by the BBC & a Bird from Bristol plus a Boyo called Brendan. This is worse than the One Show and the Media Mugging of the 70's. Hurry up and sod off you lot, we'd like our scene back, Oh and please ban anyone who dares to go on TV or you tube to promote themselves.

What like drawing your nails down a blackboard or stubbing your little toe on the corner of an open door? I feel the pain already.

The ‘Bird’ from Bristol is the daughter of a regular all nighter goer during the 80’s & 90’s, Stafford 100 club etc, maybe you should speak to her where her influence comes from ?

Hey up Barney, hope your well & your good lady is also. I don't think the fuss is about the show, it's about (In my case) the muppets it brings out of the undergrowth, you know like idiots with Flashing shoes, Emu costumes or Simon Cowell masks, who never actually went anywhere but their Uncle knew someone who did, maybe, Butlins types. They'll all stream onto the Oldies Scene, no doubt in fancy dress to blend in, as they think that's what it's all about. I stopped going to Oldies does after having an expensive Harrington nicked, the place was full of Tourists and pissheads, some after trouble, usually piss taking. BTW who's the 2 young Dj's, is it who I think?

Ha-ha it's about right but each to there own, I don't judge or really care. If you had a baracuta Harrington stolen it's an expensive jacket.....actually anything  stolen is well out of order and not good....mind you years ago they would steal anything, records out your bag, coats etc....you get dick heads everywhere unfortunately........Rob

Top notch? Well from the fancy dress pictures I have seen it wasn't my idea of top notch Kev but we'll agree to disagree on that.

As for achievements, well I'm on this scene for the love of the music & not to gain achievements but each to their own I guess.

UTB & all that:thumbsup:

That's fine then, my Mum goes line dancing so that'll make me Billy Ray Cyrus. Bit behind times if they stopped in the 90's and imho her influences now are 15 minutes of fame, an income & a YT channel.

Gordon Bennett. Skimmed through the comments and I thought maybe it was a bit of a harsh reaction, but then I went back and watched the trailer/clip that started the thread. other than their use of the two words, "Northern" and "Soul" I cannot for the life of me see what the connection with our scene is.

Well to be honest I was expecting worse.. started off OK , turned into a scene from Fame really but I don't doubt  there will be many wishing to vent their fury , what a missed opportunity to have Tears for Fears on.. surely they could have afforded  Lisa Stansfield...

Does it really matter that much? Think we should chill and take it for what it actually means to the scene. Nothing thats what. And has for having a dig at Kev Roberts and co i find that embarrassing. Ultimatley it is a business but a business that brings joy to a lot of people. If u dont wanna go then dont. Simple.

Apparently there's an underground national dance scene where people travel some distances  and thrive on dancing to music that is  ignored by most of the music press and business  and mainstream media. Their passion for the music, love of dancing and each other sees them rise above  ridicule and contempt and commercialism... but thats enough about latin ,ball room and sequence  dances .. Keep the Faith.

It was just a bit of fun really. My 11 year old daughter thought it was great.

The two young Dj,s are Pete Jones and Alex Simms Simpson. Both good lads . Both influenced by their parents and both can dance as well. No fancy dress either. Top blokes.

Much ado about nothing...

Saw a big  Northern Soul CD in the background...

A bit of Nashville line dancing mixed up with Run DMC breakers and some of the cast of Fame...sub-standard Junior School Christmas Concert fare...

Over in about three minutes, a few bars of Frank and a feeble cover of Edwin Starr.

Somebody at the BBC should get a bollocking for mis-naming this dross.

I was all set to take the poster of Lev off my bedroom wall but it can stay there now.

Anton, Craig and Bruno, I invite you to dance on the 100 Club rutted parquet whilst Jud films you... Darcy, you are given the night off to swan around on a lake someplace...

All a lot of fuss over nothing at all,No different from KFC,Lambrini,Or that bloody egg advert,It is after all only music,No point in going overboard about it at all,All sung by session singers,Royalties will be paid to the writers,What is the problem,The Northern scene is no longer an underground scene,Get used to it,The dancers did what they had to do for the show,And that is all it was a TV show,Get over it.

Exactly..................

As Vivian Alan James MacKerrell once probably said

"All right, this is the plan. We get in there and get wrecked, then we eat a pork pie, then we drop a couple of Surmontil-50s each. That means we'll miss out on Monday but come up smiling Tuesday morning."
