Strictly does Northern at Blackpool but looks strictly em magazine cover

Strictly ‘does’ Northern Soul at Blackpool this weekend , but  this trailer suggests it will be Strictly embarrassing and a missed opportunity . Im not ashamed to reveal myself as a regular viewer of SCD , which at its best is a celebration of dance , sparkle, fun,, and hopefully achievement . This trailer was aired on the BBC2 It Takes Two.., and  described by John Gilkinson Creative Choreography Director as :

“ a great opportunity to create a bit of a battle between the Ballroom dancers and the ‘Northern Souler’s’ . It looks like they have pulled in Levant  Mc Clean to suggest some credibility which it looks to lack on both music choice and dance style. A real missed opportunity by the BBC /SCD to fuse the countries weekly TV dance fest with some of us who have been embracing the power of dancing for years. Don’t shoot the messenger on this.

For those of you who are not Strictly viewers Id put in a case for you checking out the show for the superb orchestra of Dave Arch and his soulful singers. Tommy Blaize ,Lance Ellington, Andrea Grant and Hayley Sanderson pull out some fantastic covers over the years . Band leader Dave Arch is reported to have played piano in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and he continues to play jazz piano at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club with vocalist Madeline Bell.

If they don't dance to 'Out On The Floor' I'm going to refuse to pay the BBC for my TV license from now on.

Personally, I can't wait for Breakdancing week where Brendan Cole and Debbie McGee will attempt to imitate Crazy Legs from the Rocksteady Crew's signature 'windmill' move while dancing to The Incredible Bongo Band's version of 'Apache' by The Shadows.

Ho hum.

Its a real shame because its not that they lack decent choreographers , they pulled off a real sensitive and class routine for last weeks remembrance  sunday  event. I think they  go a bit Blackpool loopy and OTT . to be honest. I think they did a Motown routine this series , which came off ok. Id be happy to hear Out on the Floor , but would demand a refund if they played The Snake. !!

RW is being invited to Strictly and his playing the original Frank Wilson followed by the Javaleers, follwed by either Wombat or the Snake is this a bad dream turning into a nightmare L o L, I'm only joking but be prepared for any kind of shock if you expect the worst it might not be that much of a dogs dinner

I've just popped into the bookies while the wife's in Tesco and stuck a tenner on Len Goodman making a suprise appearance at odds oft 66/1 by leaping out of the audience and doing some backdrops and karate kicks if 'Sliced Tomatoes' gets a spin.

This is what has become of our so called Under Ground Scene, UNDERGROUND MY ARSE . Its the BIGGEST Commercialised Scene since  the Camera's came to Wigan .

This is also down to the so called NORTHERN SOUL FILM , Which to me was a bloody Joke .

Every where you go , Supermarkets , shopping centre , Pubs , etc. the music is playing Tee shirts, Hold All's , For sale , and even on Bloody TV Adverts.

The whole Scene is getting to be a joke,

Where were all these people back in the 80s and 90s, After Wigan closed. Probably at their local Night club dancing to Duran Duran .

Those were best years for Northern Rare Soul Scene, Fantastic Venues such as TOP OF THE WORLD STAFFORD , BANK HALL MINERS BURNLEY, CLIFTON HALL ROTHERAM , SHOTTS SCOTLAND , TONY,S EMPRESS HALL BLACKBURN. 100 CLUB LONDON, I could name a lot more , The music was second to none New sixties discoveries, no same old same old , And Fantastic  Djs , Mark Bicknell , Roger Banks , Guy Hennigan , Keb Darge , Pat Brady , Ady Croasdale  etc all playing new discoveries both 60s and 70s.

Those were the Golden days of Northern Soul . True Dancers , Collectors , and Djs.

I will Take my hat off to those Djs and Promoters who try really hard to put on events where the music is forward thinking , Playing not Rare but quality Under Played Soul . And their are 1000,s of quality Soul records waiting to be played.

As soon as the BANDWAGON Goes over Cliff the better.

Sorry to winge on but enough is enough , After been part of a unique scene for the past 40yrs really hurts to see the scene

as one BIG COMMERCIAL PRODUCT.

When did the BBC seize control of the northern scene.

Some of the producers wern't even born in the late 1960's- early 1970's  and they'd probably treat the mention of a black bomber as a rascist commment !

Thought the media coverage in the 70's was bad enough, but this preoccupation with the BBC trying to look trendy is beyond the pale.

The majority of the scene is nothing more than a money making exercise and self promotion, by some people who should know better-look at all the garbage for sale at so called weekenders.

To sum up,it's certainly not the scene I discovered and loved in the early 70's ,will I be watching yet another major embarrassment on National TV ?

NO, i'll probably be having a pint somewhere and remembering a time when Northern Soul was underground and not just a Saturday night joke

Comments welcome !

I've also ballroom and latin danced for nearly 20 yrs.

I never mix the two up- and neither should the BBC.

Here Here Dave,it’s absolutely pathetic, bring back the Stafford days when the scene was nearly on its arse and what you had was the true die hards.

Trying hard to look on the bright side, I think it might be quite comical. Sure, it’ll be watching-through-one-eye cringing behind the sofa stuff, but the last laugh is ours.

Here’s a trashy TV programme put on by a useless TV company, fronted by washed-up has beens (sorry Darcy) with inept paticipants floundering around to tuneless garbage. Since the demise of the popular music industry, the virtual disappearance of musical talent has been replaced by endless troops of dancers who can’t even mime, let alone sing. Mass dancing has now become the latest but lowest form of popular culture. Go to any school concert and there’ll be dozens of out-of-step show-offs desperate for attention in this me-me-me age: watch Strictly and witness the grown-ups’ version.

As we all know, cream rises to the top, so the sad saps at Strictly Prancing, running low on ideas, have reached for the Northern manual to salvage the programme. The music is guaranteed to be laughable and the dance steps even worse. But, hey, who cares? None of us watch rubbish on Saturday night TV anyway...

I agree wholeheartedly with what you say, and I went to all the venues you mention.   But the great years you refer to were before the internet was available to most people.

The internet has ruined the traditional Northern Soul, as it was.      Once, the only way to keep up with the scene was to go to forward thinking allnighters.  Now all these low commitment soul night people can learn everything sitting at home.  This means allnighter attendances have suffered and soul nights are booming!

Since roundabout year 2000 the Northern scene has been taken over by people who learned about it from their PC's.  Now it looks like a complete retro/ nostalgic pantomime!

Come on Stevie, keep up. The novelty dancing World Championship thing hosted by Roberts & Searling to boost their pension funds.
The Blackpool box set will be flying off the presses in the next couple of weeks just in time for Christmas no doubt alongside the T shirt, patches, genuine ADIDAS copy holdall complete with authentic 2nd issue patches, toilet roll holder etc...

Totally agree All the hallmarks of Roberts n £nig no doubt playing there part as advisers to the bbc, drawing in the soultemps, here today gone tomorrow, well we can all live in hope sadly it’s too late. Sub cultures like jazz funk, rockabilly, even teddy boys way more underground then this over exposed scene currently is. Sadly we can’t turn back to hands of time.

Just put on a brave face on Monday when all the knobs in the world will crawl out from the normal sad lives and try to poke fun at our way of life. We have something that they will never understand .They don't get it and never will.
