Steve Mancha Memorial Fund

Steve Mancha Memorial Fund magazine cover

While talking to Melvin Davis, it became apparent that Steve passed away in poor circumstances and his surviving mother and brother are not in great financial shape.

As Steve and the music of black Detroit mean so much to us, myself and Rob Wigley, who has worked closely with Melvin in recent years, thought it would be good to give a little back and show our appreciation of Steve and that body of artists who have given us such memorable music.

We have therefore set up a PayPal account for a fund to provide a marker or possibly even a headstone to commemorate Steve's life and what it has meant to us.

If anybody would like to contribute the PayPal account is under stevemancha@gmx.com and will just be open for a couple of weeks as we want to get the money to Detroit reasonably quickly. If anybody has problems with PayPal please PM me or Rob (ideally him as he'll be administering it) and I'm sure we can sort out a way for anybody to contribute.

I'll be contacting all UK record labels who have been involved with Steve's recordings and I'm sure Ace Records will be contributing this week.

The gifts will be anonymous unless asked otherwise and if there are any messages for the family and soul people of Detroit I'm sure Rob can pass them on via Melvin. There is no minimum donation, I believe calling it a gift, which it will be, may mean we save on PayPal charges. Perhaps somebody could enlighten us on that?

Thanks

Ady

ill be chipping in on this also -wonderful gesture - least i can do,his gritty groovesville recordings which i purchased in the very early eighties help lay the foundation for many many years of listening pleasure-he was a massive talent indeed, hope people can throw a few quid in tough times his way, gonna paypal his fund now.Planning to get out to the tribute in the summer also if anyones interested drop me a pm may only be 4-5 days -quick fly over the pond to pay respect to one of the real deal and underrated soul singers of his generation.

Superb idea and gesture. If we all pulled together, I'm sure he could have something truly fitting in the way of a lasting memorial.

I was only listening to the mancha-barnes disc on new year's eve... :-(

p.s. Who's behind this connoisseur collection label that released the steve mancha detroit soulman compilation?

If I/we bought this, would his estate stand to receive anything in the way of royalties?

...I'll be making a contribution come payday, and I'm not trying to negate what is in every way a worthy project, but surely Steve's dependents must be receiving his publishing royalties on the 60 odd songs that he wrote, and that are registered with some pretty major publishing companies both here and in the US?

All of the important songs that he wrote for Groovesville Music and Gold Forever Music are registered with various UK publishers, with royalties on them presumably being collected by MCPS. As I've been involved in ther most recent reissue I know that all of the Gold Forever songs are currently available on various Invictus/Hot Wax CDs via Demon, so there will be publishing royalties accruing across that part of his catalogue alone.

One song doesn't make a lot of money for a writer's dependents, but 60+ must bring in a decent sum, surely? Perhaps his mother and brothers need to be made aware of this, if they are not already aware...

Those moneys will have gone to the US publishers and it isn't always easy to get the money to the right people. I'll look into it and try and get the family up to scratch but it can take a very long time for people in the know, let alone a 90 year old widow

A small price to pay but a really nice gesture..

We did the same for O.V. Wright a few years back, he was also in a unmarked grave and it gave me and others a great deal of satisfaction..

Nice to focus on the coming together thats so special at times...

Is this the same as or different to the appeal launched by Pat Lewis and detailed a few days ago on Soul Source:

and linked to:

https://www.mynewslet...tter/1410683423

Seems like the initial problem is raising sufficient funds for the funeral.

A wonderful sentiment and one that I'm very happy to subscribe to. I'm sure you and Rob have enough on your plates already Ady, so this really shows your dedication and respect to the very people that gave us our scene :D

Just got this note from a friend in Detroit this morning. So if you would like to give Steve a though at 4pm the same time as his friends in Detroit will be gathered.

The funeral services for Clyde Wilson aka Steve Mancha is at 11:00AM this

morning at the Tri Star Baptist Church - corner of

Woodrow Wilson and Taylor, 1 block west of Herman Kiefer Hospital. The

family hour is at 10:00AM. Edd Henry is preaching the services.

Right a quick shout up about the marker fund, I will be contacting Melvin Davis tomorrow after the funeral and party / wake which is a celebration of Steve's life and work.

When we have enough to commission the marker we shall close the fund-we are well on target with 37 donations from all around the world being added.

I shall contact everyone who has contributed so far and ask for a message to be included in a memorial book for Steve's

Mother and family.

We have had a great response and we'd like to thank everyone who has contributed so far. However if you've thought about

adding something and haven't got around to it yet-just follow thelink and make your donation via PayPal "as a gift" evey penny or cent will go towards the memorial.

Thanks once again

It's a thoughtful gesture.

As individuals we can't really help much but as a community our collective donations can make a real difference.

This is what I really like about the soulsource community.

Well said Paul-thank you for your donation,

Still waiting on prices from Melvin --but the fund is REALLY strong at the moment and a few more donations (however big or small) can really make a great difference !

Only just heard about the appeal for help. Contributed. A crying shame that one of America's most underrated and undervalued (but not by us) musical legends should be reduced to this. Hope this helps.

We will be closing the fund at Midnight tomorrow-Sunday-its looking excellent -but we need enough to cover the" add on s" sales taxes fees etc.

Melvin is making sure we have covered all bases with this one before closing the fund.

If there is a surplus after everything is paid, Melvin has suggested it goes to Steve's 92 year old mother, which we shall be looking at.

Anyone wishing to add to fund please do so your name will be in the memorial book.

i'm actually overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone

thank you very much

We have left it open a tad longer as we whave a couple of "promised" donation yet still to arrive

I can announce that the total raised so far is just over

£1,300.00 thumbsup.gifthumbsup.gifthumbsup.gifthumbsup.gifthumbsup.gifthumbsup.gifthumbsup.gif

We are pricing a marble flat marker (not a concrete or stone one ) as it appears the place where Steve was laid to rest won't allow a traditional stand up headstone.

We obviously want to get this right so it is worth the slight wait, in the meantime any surplus will be passed on to Steve's aged mother.

I shall be purchasing a memorial book for comments from all those who have donated to the fund.

There is still time to donate before we close the account

BUT VERY VERY WELL DONE AND MUCH THANKS
