Rhetta Hughes - Shotgun 45 out 28 March

Rhetta Hughes - Shotgun 45 out 28 March magazine cover

Out this Monday March 28th March 2011

NEW SINGLE ON SHOTGUN RECORDS

Following the success of our recent singles by Sandra Wright, Eddie Floyd, Sam Dees and Sir Ted Ford, we are pleased to announce news of another great single which is scheduled for release on Shotgun Records on March 28th:

RHETTA HUGHES

Cry Myself To Sleep / Giving Up My Heartaches

Shotgun SHOT 107

Release date: 28 March 2011

Distribution: SELREC

Award-winning actress and soul singer Rhetta Hughes recorded these tracks for her acclaimed 1969 album Re-Light My Fire. The sessions were produced at Terra Sherma in Detroit by Jo Armstead and Mike Terry, two veterans of soul music whose songs are published by our sister company Millbrand Music Ltd.

'Cry Myself To Sleep' has long been acknowledged as a soul classic, even though it wasn't released as a single. Surprisingly, the Motown-flavoured 'Giving Up My Heartaches' has yet to receive the same amount of attention but that will change very soon. Advance copies are now being circulated to selected club and radio DJs.

This release is also a testimony to the talents of writer, singer and producer Jo Armsted and arranger Mike Terry (deceased October 2008). They are two of the most admired names in the history of soul music.

Cracking tracks....as you already know, I love the arrangement on 'Cry myself to Sleep'! Good luck......

Hello Carl,

I'll try to clarify which musicians were on those sessions. Obviously I can't ask Mike but Jo might remember.

Just keep Shootin' 'em up Paul.

Sean

Thanks Sean,

As you know, it wasn't easy to decide which track should be the official A side, I like them both equally.

It's also likely that the album will be issued on CD this year, not necessarily on Shotgun, maybe licensed out to another label.

Best wishes,

Received the 45 at the weekend. Thank you Paul.

Got to say folks, it sounds incredible. The Mastering is Top Notch 45 quality!

Will be great being able to play it out LOUD in future (as opposed to off the album).

Worth mentioning, the big bonus for the Northern Scene is the equally fabulous flipside 'Giving Up My Heartaches'.

This side is a real sleeping Giant for any Northern DJ and a favourite tip of my 'Just Soul' buddy Tats Taylor (a guy with the ears to spot a really good tune, believe me).

This is another superb and well thought out release from Shotgun.

Crossover Monster on the Topside - Sleeping Giant Fingersnapping Northern on the Flip!

Brilliant job mate.

Oughta sell by the shedload.

Roger Banks was playing 'Cry Myself to Sleep' in NS rooms 15 years ago at least to critical aclaim. I have been playing out 'Giving Up My Heartaches' for some years too, an amazing LP, one of my all time faves & the 45 is a welcome bonus, as Sean says nice un loud !.

This is a great release. And not only is it now for the first time available on a seven inch single, instead of only being an LP track, it's on a fantastic sounding LOUD seven inch!

Paul kindly sent a test pressing which I played as my last record at Soul In The Square in Holborn on Saturday night, and it went down a storm.

All The Best,

Neil

Thanks everyone,

It's out now and selling well but I reckon a lot of 'northern soul' fans are missing out on that great flip side.
