Although this is our final volume of Pied Piper material, it is almost certainly not the end of the history of this short-lived but influential company. It features more exciting tape finds, and there is even a little-known Pied Piper record from King Louie’s Court. No doubt more tapes and acetates will emerge over time, and if so we’ll endeavour to include them on appropriate future collections.

The story of the Joe Douglas and Yvonne Baker Philly productions has yet to be fully revealed; if only some more witnesses would come forward. Our alternate version of Douglas’ ‘Crazy Things’ remains a mystery. Jack Ashford can’t remember who is singing on this original take but he is certain he only ever cut it on one artist; the backing track may have been recycled without his knowledge for the Douglas 45.

Likewise, the story behind Rose Batiste’s ‘This Heart Is Lonely’ is still shrouded in the mists of uncertainty. Here we feature the sumptuous backing track to the vocal we released on our first Pied Piper collection. We have kept some of the girly vocals from Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent to differentiate it from the plain instrumental backing track issued two years later as ‘Bari Track’,

As ever quality all the way a copy of this will be in our household very soon. The first two pied piper`s are excellent this is no different. This CD will be put to good use on my thirty mile round trip to work in the coming week`s while stuck in traffic.

This is a brilliant set, now playing on rotation here.  Delighted to see future Kent releases will capture subsequent discoveries from this Northern Soul 'Holy Grail' source.

Clearly the master tapes to the Hesitations and Freddy Butler albums are available as used in the Pied Piper releases so it will be great to have them released by Kent Records if possible with the upgraded sound quality possible. The earlier Goldmine releases are I think the only time those two albums have been on CD.

Bari track was a Solid Hitbound production and Joe Douglas, Reggie Alexander, Four Sonics and Persians weren't Pied Piper productions.

The Renegade.

PS Dr. Ed Wolfrum named 'The bari track' when there was no title on the tape box and he wanted to remember what it was ! He engineered the session at Golden World.

You forgot Yvonne Baker.

It's explained in the notes

Yes. Yvonne Baker too - the connection was with Kae Williams, a Philly DJ whom Ashford knew.

Why is "Gambler's Blues" been put on the CD isn't it off one of the earlier Kent "Pied Piper" CD's ?

Because we found the master tapes after having used acetate dubs on the Nancy Wilcoxes first time around and we wanted such a great recording to be heard in best possible quality

I once tried to run a do where I hired CD decks to play unreleased tracks from discs alongside OVO. Failed miserably and bombed big time but this and other releases I feel vindicate the effort if not the execution. Got to agree with Jim Elliot 'Ease My Mind' brilliant track.
