Hi Garv,

Well these things tend to work at their own speed, which from our point of view can be slow. There's all the problems of the costs involved in transferring tapes, baking masters, formatting 'em etc, etc and no one really wants to pay for all that if they can avoid it. Then there's any potential legal issues which in some cases may mean the artists wanting to re-negotiate his/her/their contracts which can be a grey area at the best of times.....

However, with it being the 50th anniversary of Holland-Dozier-Holland as a songwriting team and the 40th anniversary of Philadelphia International Records in 2012, I'm rather hoping that these issues with H-D-H and Philly International can be resolved for the bigger picture. So watch this space I guess.....

Will obviously feed out any info as it comes in so stay tuned.......

Wait til you see the You Tube clips of the interview we did with Tom at his apartment which should be ready for this coming Monday. It's every collector's dream to see some of the stuff he has in there. At one point the camera lovingly lingers over a master tape which says "The Volcanoes - 1966" on it so the mind boggles at what he has in that apartment!

I have a 12" "Feel the need" that Sam had lifted the last few mins instrumental off it to play as a new mix instru, was told the 12" was never released, came on a plain yellow lable with no writing on it. Cost a fair few bucks too when i found one !!

Well, Philly Groove pre-dated the 12" era, so all of the above were 7" and album releases only. However, Tom always wanted to get his hands on the tapes because he knew all the musicians anyway and knew what the quality of the recordings was like. Plus "This Is The House Where Love Died" was always one of his favourite-ever tunes so naturally he couldn't wait to get his hands on the original master tapes. If you like beautiful early Philly masterpieces with full orchestration, then this album's for you.

And Chris definitely hasn't been listed in the thankyou credits......

LOL, I'm working on it Martin. Actually I think the Moulton project will probably appeal to SSers more than the Dimitri project as the material is slightly older for the most part. Plus Tom's just so good with strings.........

Personally, I can't fault any of the remixes but then again I'm slightly biased

i was on my travels last night , when the radio station ( Radio Sheffield ) the car radio was tuned into , played the TM remix pf Finishing Touch's " Second Best ( Is Never Enough ) " .

Just how good is that track ? I thought the original was good , but the remix is excellent .

Looking forward to getting my hands on a copy .

Yep Martin, it's pretty gratifying to know that there's a huge audience for 40 year old material in 2010. Kinda makes it all worthwhile. I always had "Philly Re-Grooved" down as a 'specialist' release at best but then I figured that Tom Moulton appeals to several different scenes - Northern, Modern, Disco, Re-Edit , Cosmic Disco etc, etc, so maybe if all those Moulton enthusiasts bought it at the same time then maybe we'd do OK.......

Most of all I'm pleased for Tom. He's kinda like us in his obsessiveness i.e. totally disfunctional. However he's also the living breathing expert on mixing great Soul and Dance records so I'm happy as hell that we've found a decent audience for his work. Just great stuff............

Cosmic Disco is basically spacy dance music which appeals to a new breed of 30+ Disco trainspotters who generally wear beards and have unkempt hair. The top Cosmic Disco DJ's are people like Harvey, Theo Parrish and Todd Terje who release their own top sounds and re-edits on custom-made 12" bootlegs once they've broken them in the clubs. Top Cosmic Disco records are often covered-up and the originals end-up being worth hundreds of pounds when they're finally uncovered. Does any of this sound familiar Malc?

The arch-deacon and one of the most collectible of the top Cosmic Disco icons is none other than Norman Whitfield, so the Cosmic Disco diggers have been busy finding obscure Nytro and Undisputed Truth album tracks which they then creatively re-edit to create Cosmic Disco masterpieces. However these guys dig for obscure Disco the same way we dig for Northern. They're doing some FANTASTIC stuff with some of the early Philly gear now. A top Cosmic Philly track would be Love Committee's "Just As Long As I Got You" 'cos that's just perfect and a production masterpiece. Some of the best re-edits I've ever heard in my life have come out of these scene. Grey Matter's re-edit of Dee Dee Sharp Gamble's "Easy Money" is a masterpiece as is Todd Terje's Tangoterje remix of Michael Jackson's "I Can't Help It". If you wanna hear a couple of 'em I'll be playing some killer re-edits of Marvin Gaye's "Praise You" and The O'Jays "Darlin' Darlin' Baby" (which is brilliant by the way) on the show today.

Start worrying. Some of 'em are digging into Northern now. It won't be long before you hear a Saxie Russell re-edit at your local Cosmic Disco hangout Malc!

You should hear the Larry Sanders rework of Jean Carn's "If You Wanna Go Back" too Malc 'cos that's another beauty. The more creative of some of these re-edits really allow the tracks to breath so that's the beauty of 'em IMO. I'm currently trying to sort out a Philly International Re-Edits comp for the 40 anniversary of P.I. next year, so hopefully I'll be able to get the best of the re-edits out there soon fingers crossed......

You should hear the Larry Sanders rework of Jean Carn's "If You Wanna Go Back" too Malc 'cos that's another beauty. The more creative of some of these re-edits really allow the tracks to breath so that's the beauty of 'em IMO. I'm currently trying to sort out a Philly International Re-Edits comp for the 40 anniversary of P.I. next year, so hopefully I'll be able to get the best of the re-edits out there soon fingers crossed......

Certainly the Trammps and the Philly Devotions have been tweaked by Tom. He sent me mixes months ago. I'm not aware of the others having been re-mixed bty Tom though. That said, even he can't remember everything he has done. Don't think either Trammps or Philly D's have come out as there is a real chance of Volume 2 of "A Tom Moulton Mix" being released and they may well appear on there.

You are quite correct Sebastian. This is where the confusion arises though: I kinda class Tom's mix as the original release that everyone knows. He has done a much longer mix with more of his trademark strings which is the one that I was talking about... so it's A Tom Moulton Mix re-mix if you like and that's the one that I don't think has seen the light of day yet as a CD or vinyl release. Of course I'm always up for being corrected if anyone knows different!

Great stuff Steve. It's a f*ckin' KILLER album and it seems to be selling around the world and on a number of different scenes. This is the album of choice for the guys in the office and it's been on constant rotation this week and I've gotta say it really holds up to repeated plays. I've listened to it a zillion times and still get elated every time I hear it. A work of art and I couldn't be happier that we've found a huge audience with this release. Great stuff!

You'll be pleased to know that Volume 2 is already on the drawing board.......
