Hi Chalky

I've really enjoyed listening to these podcasts. Like I said, I never went to Stafford and never realised that alot of newly released stuff was played there. Listening to these podcasts I can understand why it was an exciting period to be on the scene. Expect to be listening to these many times in the coming weeks and thanks for posting them.

Thanks for the replies.

The music was certainly across the board, trying hard to think of anywhere since where it was like that all in one room, maybe Allbrighton at times.

There will be many more over time. Working on Dave Withers/Rod Shard plays and some discoveries this weekend hopefully so keep checking the site.

Working on the iTunes subscription but iTunes keep rejecting it

Isn't the venue still running? We had an intern from Stafford a few years ago and she said it's still open but now called Zanzibars or so??

Zanzibar is correct, the reunion a couple of years ago was held there, which I couldn't make, but I went to a previous reunion '02/03 and it was Zanzibar then I recall.

It will always be Top Of The World though won't it! ;-)

Sunday morning, time to get your feet up with the Sunday paper and listen to the latest instalment of the Stafford Story. Once again the spotlight is on Dave Withers and Rod Shard with some more great records from the early 80's. Most still in demand today, some forgotten about and some no doubt still unknown to those who kissed the 80's altogether.

This second set form Dave and Rod has taken 6 attempts to finish, I kept f*cking it up, twice in the last couple of tracks  So I hope it was worth it :D

Next it will be the turn of Gary Rushbrook so keep checking the site

Cheers George. I'm not sure anyone is any the wiser who it is, Rod said it was Holland, Dozier, Holland so went with that. It is on the old tape listing as Holland and Dozier. Maybe Robb K or Rod can shed a bit more light on it.

There is a Jimmy Ruffin track of the same title.

Chalky, superb mate! Brings back happy memories of TOTW allnighters and all the toons are class, much like Dave T's tash and permed hair combo back then!!! Funny how time changes perceptions; back then I can vividly recall getting grief from some sections for our support of Sixties Newies and Modern Soul (weren't Guy & Keb banned from DJing at some venues??) and an article headed Stafford - Playground For The Pompous underlined that battle for the heart of the scene. Fast forward 20+ years and a look at the tracklistings above prove who won that battle. Keep up the good work, as we all know there were 100's of sounds broken at Stafford every night!

Ah Daves Modern set brings back memories of being sat in the main hall, grooving on Booker Newbury III 'Love Town', for almost the entire nighter before realising the sixties room was upstairs with all the Letchworth crew who'd failed to tell me and Rob Kearney about it!!! We were begining to think TOTW was a tad Modern biased! Having said that we did REALLY get into the Modern after that, Ronnie Loveman Stokes - TOON!,,,,,

Leo Wright & ElbeJays - Baby Don't You Do It - Unissued/Cover Up

Gasoline Powered Clock - Forest Fire On Main Street - GPC

Leo Wright, nice surprise. Didn't know there was another version of this song. I only knew the United Four c/up one (acetate only). United Four was first played by Richard Searling wasn't it?

Gasoline Powered Clock, it's the (daft) vocal side on the podcast. Wasn't it the instrumental side that got played?

Chalky

Posted

Which ever side was played Benji they are both crap.

Untitled Four was played out as Leo Wright, speeded up a bit was it not? I have a faster one on a tape and slowed down sounds like this. It was Searling late Wigan I believe....Gary Rushbrooke must have got it from RS along with some other stuff he played early Stafford.

Benji

Posted

I quite like the Gas Powered Clock instrumental, but not as a Northern track more as a pop one.

I think the Leo Wright cut sounds quite different to the United Four cut I'm used to. Will see if I can find my United Four mp3 and if it's really just a speeded up Leo Wright.

Do you know if original acetate is uncredited?
