Northern Soul - The Film - News, mainstream and more

Northern Soul - The Film - News, mainstream and more magazine cover

A while back here on Soul Source, you may have noticed amongst all the usual online arguments, daily dramas and such the odd reference concerning a planned film that was said to have a northern soul influence. As the months passed more comments and snippets have followed becoming more frequent and that bit more interesting.

Words of a website, a dance club/school setup surfaced, a few videos on youtube mentioned, a facebook group and other such 'social' affairs showed up. Of course I can't speak for anyone else but to me all these various events started to come together and gave me a sort of sense of something going on here that could be, just this once, something that might just... get things right.

Last week saw this story break cover, firstly an article on the Screen Daily website http://www.screendaily.com showed up and then a few days later a fully fledged mainstream showing in the Guardian Music section titled Britain's got talcum: Northern Soul, the film

As the articles and websites say not just more but as always in a better style than your usual expectations from myself, I will clip them below

About the film - from the films website

This is a story of a youth culture that changed a generation and influenced songwriters, producers, DJs and designers for decades to come.

This is the story of Northern Soul.

Award-winning director Elaine Constantine will begin shooting her first feature-length film Northern Soul in January 2012 under Stubborn Heart Productions and in association with Baby Cow Films.

The film will tell the tale of two Northern boys whose worlds are changed forever when they discover black American soul music.

Rejecting their small town existence working the production line, they dream of going to America in search of the super-rare records that will help them to become the best DJ's on the British soul scene.

Guardian Feature - Britain's got talcum: Northern Soul, the film

On a Thursday afternoon at the Old Queens Head pub in north London, it's pretty quiet. There are just three or four customers at the bar downstairs, but coming through the ceiling is an insistent, Motown-like bassline. Climb the stairs and you're in another world. Skating across the parquet floor are some 200 kids spinning, dropping, sweating to a five-decades-old tune called Suspicion by the Originals.

Photographer Elaine Constantine has been obsessed with Northern Soul since 1976, when she went to a youth club in her home town of Bury, Lancashire.

"I saw some older kids from my school dancing in a style I'd never seen ...

...it was slightly melancholy but at the same time euphoric...

.. told me it was Northern Soul. It changed my life. I knew I wanted something different ..."

This is her first feature-length movie. Simply called Northern Soul, it recreates the atmosphere of soul clubs where rare records were spun, and dancers scattered talc to make moves easier. A huge underground scene, with strongholds in unfashionable northern towns like Stoke, Stafford, Blackpool and (most famously) Wigan, it developed its own codes, its own mythology.

There's been a few videos doing the rounds based mainly around the dance aspect

here's the latest one

Look forward

In a week or two we will be featuring an interview with Elaine here on Soul Source, if anyone does have any questions they would like to ask, then just pm me them and will see what can do.

End word

Northern soul is a complex term, I'll always say that no one can or will ever come up with an explanation that captures every aspect of it in a way that satisfies each and every soul fans own view... never mind put it on film! However so far Elaine Constance and all involved seem to be making a very determined effort to come the closest yet to doing such.

Shooting for the film Northern Soul will begin in January 2012 under Stubborn Heart Productions and in association with Baby Cow Films

There is a phrase - Everybody has a book in them.

It relates to the human instinct of story telling that goes back as far as language in every human culture in the world.

Some people will be good, others great, and the masses pretty ropey.

In Elaine's case we already have an accomplished story teller through her photographic work. Anyone who has seen her work can make up their own narrative to the pictures. In this film Elaine is getting the chance to tell her experience of the Northern Soul scene. And unlike Soul Boy (which I thought was OK), Elaine is going to be telling the story from within so to speak. Rather than an outsiders cliched view.

I think as has been said by many already. If anyone is going to do a job that rises above the rest, it is going to be someone like Elaine, who is telling the story with her own passion. Rather than getting an eclectic mix of stories and attempting to cobble them together.

My reference would be Paul Sadot's play one night in Wigan. Again Paul wrote that play from his perspective and experience of decades of love for the Northern Soul scene. And the results were second to none IMO.

I was as sceptical about Soul Boy as I am excited about Elaine's work. Even if it is the best thing ever set to celluloid about Northern Soul, I cant see Elaine being able to buy the mansion next to Joan Collins' island in the West Indies. So the criticism about 'cashing in' is surely mute. But while maybe not financially rich, if Elaine does pull it off, she can 'consider herself a millionaire'.

It's a leap in logic to say that any attempt to portray something in art is necessarily 'commercialising' that subject. I can't speak directly for Elaine Constantine but I would imagine that this is a story which is very personal to her and one she wants to tell through the medium of film. You seem to have a very one dimensional view of film in general. Not everything on the big screen needs to be a flashy commercial blockbuster on one hand or a 'Mutiny on the Buses' on the other. I don't think the aim of this film is to 'revive' interest in Northern Soul or if it even needs reviving.

As I said above I understand scepticism about any project like this as one of the guiding principles of Northern or rare soul as a scene or movement is that it was entirely created by its participants, maybe the first thing in Britain ever distinctly like that in character. It wasn't a case of the music industry or television channels or daily newspapers in London telling young people what clothes to wear or what records to buy or what night clubs to go to. Its very underground nature was one of the defining reasons why it was so important to the people who followed the lifestyle every weekend and maybe the biggest key to its longevity.

If someone who was on the scene wishes to make a film about what it meant to them and how it shaped their values we should respect their choice to try to tell that story.

ive read all the quotes on this continuing saga and decided to chime in on this one in particular, but just in brief. just like our formost iconic dj's, the scene does not revive, it simply reinvents to suit the next generation. our scene and our music is durability accentuated. one thing it could never be tagged with is an andy warhol " fifteen minutes of fame" rebuke. a "wearing our hearts on our sleeves" celluloid celebratory acknowledgment of our all-consuming love for northern soul, surely is worth the effort, especially in the hands of a true soulie who wants to tell the story without so much as a stereotypical commercial distraction....the trap that has been fallen into before. this has to be a statement, akin to a stone carved monument,...a defining moment that from a visionary's point of view, we have never come close to fulfilling without unwelcome intervention from an unknowledgeable media and its other subsidiaries.

im probably like a good many others who do not know elaine personally, but reading the dialogue here, has alone, convinced me of her positivity. i remember, like a good many of you out there, the hype and furore that encompassed the release of the award winning documentary about the funk brothers and the triumphalism of finally achieving the recognition they deserved as much as the indebtedness, owed to them by their begrudging employer's motown....without them, there would have been no story and remember,....the foundation stones of our scene were built on the sounds coming out of detroit....the initial backbone of what morphed into northern soul.

that documentary is like an eleventh commandment, set in stone, where the roots of our musical heritage came from.....

so now is the time for a twelfth and, be it not a documentary, its by the people, for the people, the most important belief anyone should possess in telling our story the right way. i truely believe we can have before us a film we will watch and relate to, over and over for the rest of our natural lives.

It's refreshing to know that someone with a real passion for the scene and it's music is behind this. Replicating youth / sub culture on film is never going to be easy as so much is lost in time.

I do find the dance instruction a bit cringworthy (I keep hearing a voice saying ' Northern soul cost's and right here is where you start paying' LOL) but it's great to see those young faces attending the 'Dance Club' and looking like they are having a ball - I hope they keep doing it for reasons other than a career in the movies.

Good luck to whoever is behind it and don't let the miserable old sods on here get you down :) .

i would like to point out to those of you that think these kids are in this just as a short cut to being famous BOLLOCKS!,ive got to know some of these kids who attend a dance session in the north of england, they're true SOULIES who attend weekenders, soul nights and allnighters up and down the country, collect records, some dj at venues-not bad for kids with "no real interest in the scene".most of these youngsters are sons and daughters of soulies, some collect and wear vintage 70s clothes during the day(how many 40 and 50 yr olds do this?)They attend these dance sessions to hone their skills and perfect their technique yes for the film as Elaine wants to recreate authentic 70s dancin(they are bein guided by old soulies not dance teachers who have been around the scene for years) and also as a social get together so they can plan their weekends rippin up a dance floor now back off and stop tryin to put them off as they're the future of a scene non of us wants to see die with us ranting_1.gif

This doesn't make sense, I think Steve G pointed out, how can we now, approaching 60 portray ourselves at 20, do you not think an audience would notice we were all slightly beyond our sell by date? It's a piece of drama, film makers use actors to tell their story, that's all Elaine is doing, how about we watch the film when it comes out, then give an opinion?

Still really looking forward to this film

I think if I saw someone in the street dressed like that I'd presume they were going to a fancy dress party.

Still, every generation looks back to those before it; in the 70's there was a fad for dressing like people in the 40's and 50's, people would watch old films to see what was being worn then copy it, Glenn Miller got into the charts. Never gets mentioned now. These days when people talk about 70's fashions in the mainstream media they always roll out flares (loon pants anyone?) and afghan coats as that is what the middle class kids who went to University wore. I wouldn't have been seen dead in an Afghan coat FFS.

Difference is now there are internet forums where the older generation can laugh and poke fun at youngsters who try and dress like they did 40 years ago, whereas in the 70's it was just your dad who told you that you looked ridiculous and talked all the way through top of the pops, etc.

Funny old world.
