DAVE GODINS DEEP SOUL TREASURES VOL 4 - KENT - CDKEND 230

In 1997, Dave Godin launched his first Deep Soul Treasures CD. Of the genre he had so masterfully identified, Godin noted, "It is certainly the music of the outsider," before adding that this glorious music he had so skilfully hewn from the rich musical landscape of black America, was, "a form of therapy by which we are brought face to face, with the worst thing we think could happen to us but by experiencing it through the artistic metaphor, we learn the lesson..."

For record company owners, it was often the practice in the 50s to have a vocal group named after one of your labels. The Bihari family, owners of the Modern group of labels, were no exception. They had started the Flair label in 1953 with primarily a hillbilly leaning, but then decided to widen the labels musical spectrum to include blues and R&B. What better than to have a vocal group named the Flairs as a showcase for the Flair label? The Flairs were born and they progressed to become one of the most respected vocal groups that came out of the West Coast doo wop scene.

In a career that spanned four decades, Pops, Mavis, Pervis (later replaced by Yvonne) and Cleotha Staples made a lot of remarkable recordings. Happily the majority of these have remained in print, in one form or another, virtually since they were first issued. However, the group recorded for several labels in that time, and thus its been the case to date that anyone wanting to build a definitive "Best Of The Staple Singers" collection would have to buy at least five CDs, maybe more, in an attempt to piece together such a thing. 

GENE VINCENT CUT OUR SONGS / Primitive Texas Rockabilly&Honky Tonk - ACE - CDCHD 1018

It all took place in a quiet corner of east Texas nearly 50 years ago. The location is the Trail 80 Courts, a motel in Mineola, a railroad hamlet about 90 miles east of Dallas. Theres a train in the night and the sagebrush is tumbling across the dirt track courtyard. Inside, a bunch of good ole boys have gathered for a songwriters jam session convened by the motels owner Jack Rhodes, the man they look to for inspiration and guidance. A guitarist in small local country outfits, Rhodes didnt take up songwriting in earnest until the early 1950s by which time he was in his mid-forties. One or two of his songs got recorded and pretty soon he was on his way. A tie-up with a song publisher affiliated to Capitol Records opened up new vistas and in 1955 two of Rhodes songs, Beautiful Lies and A Satisfied Mind, became major country hits with the latter attaining "standard" status, as did another of his songs Silver Threads And Golden Needles popularised by the Springfields.

When Larry Williams picked up the banner so prematurely dropped by his Specialty label mate Little Richard in 1957, he became for a while the very personification of rocknroll. Frantic but always in control, wild but witty, crazy but cool, he had an unquenchable taste in bizarre women: short, fat, bony, dizzy or jelly bellied, Larry loved em all. more

MOANING, GROANING, CRYING / A Galaxy Of Soul and R&B - KENT - CDKEND 236

MOANING, GROANING, CRYING is the last of three sequential examinations of Galaxy, the much maligned R&B subsidiary of San Franciscos Fantasy Records, which operated from the late 1950s up until 1973. Last month we served up "Diggin Gold" on Ace and "Get Your Lie Straight" on BGP, sets which chronologically bookend this fine imprints discography. This latest volume on Kent focuses on what I consider the golden era of the Galaxy catalogue, the mid-to-late 1960s, and also includes items from associated outlets of the time like Early Bird, Soul Clock and M.I.O.B. In order to accurately reflect the tenor of these labels collective output in that time period, the contents are equal parts R&B and soul, with an admitted bias toward the upbeat (ie you just gotta shake a tailfeather to this stuff). That was the Galaxy sound: somewhat disparate by todays stricter genre definitions, but a distinctive, eminently soulful sound nonetheless. more

INSTRUMENTAL EXPLOSION / Incendiary Funk and R&B Instrumentals - BGP - CDBGP2 163

KEPOW! The record hits the deck, a syncopated drum beat fills the speakers and suddenly a screeching saxophone comes in. The DJ has nailed the dancefloor and hes done it with that much used but underappreciated tool, the instrumental. BOOM! And hes not stopped there, with a Hammond organ and a James Brown rhythm - always a JB rhythm. Hes kept the instrumental theme going and there is no way that its going to anyone is going to leave the dance floor. It is actually a European Union rule that funk DJs need to play 25% instrumentals in their DJ set (eu. Reg. 1475 funk), but as anyone with an iota of experience on what some of the younger sorts may call "the wheels of steel" will tell you, reckless experimentation can take that mix up into the high 80s and sometimes beyond for a completely rapt dancefloor. At BGP we are inveterate risk takers (amongst other things) so, give or take a few mumbled words, grunts, and asides, we have decided to bring forth a 100% instrumental set that should set your pulses racing.

Its a reasonable question to ask why any yoga practitioner should require a music CD to help find inner silence. In a world awash with background sounds - muzak, lift music, shopping mall playlists - does meditation require its own soundtrack?
