Lamont Dozier R.I.P. magazine cover

So sad to hear of the passing of Lamont Dozier a real Giant in the world of Motown and Soul Music. He wrote so many wonderful songs, from the days with Eddie and Brian Holland at Motown to going solo in the 70s. His style was something special, he was a real talent with that smooth tone when he sang. R.I.P. Lamont

We had tickets to see him in London just before Covid came along. The gig was sadly cancelled. Remember buying the Kent LP Moving On Up in 1984 and listening to this for the first time. Work of a genius. RIP

One of the greats of popular music. As a songwriter unsurpassable and let's hope that the accolades reflect his immense talent.. I actually met him in a village pub in Surrey back in the 80s. He was humble and polite. As a singer and  performer he was under rated. What a record 'Why Can't We Be Lovers' is.  Lamont Dozier R.I.P.

One of three men - HDH - who wrote the Soul Music songbook for our generation. A multi talented inspiration who captivated us all. The binding soul for the Holland brothers, his spirit & legacy lives on. In his immortal phrase, Going Back To My Roots...God Bless Mr Dozier.

A sad day.  The sad loss of a musical genius who wrote, produced and sang so many great songs.

My particular favourites are "New Breed Kinda Woman" from the Invictus days and Margie Joseph's powerful interpretation of his "All Cried Out".

Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

So sad, along with the Holland Bros,  and Levi Stubbs, they were responsible for introducing me to the chapel that is soul music.  Then to branch out as a solo artist and produce the catalogue he leaves behind is something I don't think has been equalled.  So many of his greats have been mentioned, I'd just add 'Peddling Music On The Side' one of his underated tracks in my humble opinion.

I know where on the shelves I will be heading this evening.

RIP Lamont

A legend for both his contribution to the HDH Motown legacy and his own solo work . My favourite being  this sophisticated example of Lamont’s classical roots are apparent in the popular “ Why Can’t We Be Lovers ‘ from the 1974 album Love and Beauty .By the time of its release he   had already parted from the failing Invictus  label, and the Holland brothers   put the album out to capitalise on his solo success with ABC.

The track  develops a lush growing orchestral score , a haunting melodic horn solo all overlaid with Lamont’s painful reflections on love gone wrong.  it could easily have come out of the PIR stable. RIP. KTF. Cool Notes

Very sad to hear about his passing- Lamont wrote and produced some of my favorites songs of the 60's and 70's. This is one of my favorites from his solo work-

That moment at 2:46 in 'Can't Get Off Until The Feeling Stops' when it swells into the ending chorus. Truly moving music (just played in this selection on the train).

Simply one of the greats.

Difficult to pick one track from an artist who was responsible for so much high quality recordings but i think this is a neat track from an outstanding album.

If anybody on here is unfamiliar with his LP on The Originals...." California Sunset", please look out for it. One of the greatest albums ever.

Here is another of his solo tracks...brilliant

Where the use of the word “genius” to describe someone seems barely adequate.

Good to know that he did live long enough to give us his own take on his story via his book 'How Sweet it is'.

So many leaving us now, but losing a true genious like Lamont really bites.

Can echo all of the above postings and add one of my favourites from his solo career.

So sad to hear of the passing of Lamont Dozier. To me he was a true genius. Life will feel a little more empty without him. Lamont was not just a writer, he was such a brilliant artist in his own right. Listen to the lyrics of can't get off until the feeling stops,  it's simply beautiful poetry set to music.

I will always regret not having the opportunity to see him perform live.

Like others, I had tickets to see him on his tour a few years ago, but of course it was cancelled due to his health problems.

A great shame.

Ok...admission time.

I stopped collecting Lamont's albums after " Bittersweet". Not a reflection on him, I tended to finish mid/ late 70s.. Any thoughts on his later work, any recommendations.?
