In 1965, her persistence paid off. Frances told her husband, "I'm entering the WCHB Talent Show and I'm going to win." His response was "Nobody wants to sign a 22 year old with 2 babies." Frances replied "You're going to eat those words!"

And eat those words he did! In June 1965 Frances came in 1st place out of 5,000 contestants singing her own rendition of The Shirelles "Everybody Love a Lover". Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records, was a judge and co-sponsored the contest. Frances won $500.00, a dozen long stemmed roses and a one year recording contract with Motown. She was awarded the prestigious honor of becoming the first female artist on the Motown Soul Label.

Frances recorded "Keep On Loving Me"/ "Fight Fire With Fire" which was released 2 days before her 23rd birthday. It was reported that the record sold 10,000 copies on it's own merit, although it was never promoted by the label, even though WCHB announced that the release being played was by contest winner Frances Nero every 1-1/2 hours.

Very sad indeed. SoultripUSA fans will remember her as our tour guide at Hitsville USA in 2009. I introduced her to Mel Britt.

She won a talent competition in 1965. The prize being a contract with Motown ( Ronnie Mcneir came 2nd!)

A fun loving lady who finally got major success with Footsteps.

RIP Miss Grand Boulevard

Sorry to hear this.  She was a very nice person.  She came onto Soulful Detroit Forum, and became a regular poster for some years.  She graciously answered all of our questions.

They played 'Keep on loving me' tonight at Preston Grasshoppers as a tribute.

Frances left us with some special music and I hope events this weekend will pay tribute by playing one of her tunes.

Every week seems there's another light extinguished from our world, sad news comes too often.  My thoughts are with her family at what is usually a joyous time of year for them.  RIP Frances.

A lovely smiley woman as I remember, as Kev says she was at Motown Museum as a guide when we visit in 2009, she and Lorraine Chandler showed us around giving us all a glimpse into the world of how Motown worked, laughing when she showed us the small bright Tangerine Orange vinyl sofa where the Great Mr Gaye slept after boxing records through the night for distribution the next day and how he lay in the funeral parlour next door after his death and that everyone in between takes would slip out to pay their respects. I also remember that they all (Motown artists etc) at The Memphis Smoke Diner after, it was her Birthday & the crowd sang "Happy Birthday" to her, together with Mel Britt singing along with "She'll come running back" & the Capitols after much persuasion sing "Cool Jerk" acapella along with an excited & appreciative crowd of Brit's etc sang along. Memories hey & the pulled Pork wasn't bad either. :hatsoff2:

Spot. :shades:
