Don Covay R I P

Don Covay R I P magazine cover

Some of you may not have heard the sad news that Don Covay passed away Saturday (31st). The news came via a Facebook posting from Don's friend and recent MD, Jon Tiven. It seems that Don had suffered from ill health since his stroke in the 1990s, and this has now taken its toll. Don, as you may know, was my first soul 'idol' and the reason for my entry into the world of music journalism, this as founder/secretary of the Don Covay Fan Club in 1966.

"you put something on me" one of the first and greatest soul record i ever heard on the midnight soul lp belonging to a girlfriends older brother. Don Covay must have been Mick Jaggers idol cause he doesnt half try to sound like him.

Mentioned a few years back on here about Mick Jagger's "coincidental" similar sound and phrasing to Don Covay, Don was a true "Super Dude" and "Somebody's been enjoying my home" "She was checkin out" "Leave him 1&2" are true legendary records, as good as anything IMHO that you will ever hear RIP Don and thanks for sharing your talent

I'd agree with that. Loved his "Leave Him" 1&2 and was only playing them the other week. RIP

Just read this, sorry to hear about his death. One of soul music's greats. He started recording in the 50s, wrote Pony Time, later a hit for Chubby Checker, Letter Full Of Tears for Gladys Knight among other songs, but found his own unique style in the mid 60s on Atlantic. Used to hear plenty of his records in clubs at that time, See Saw was my favourite by him then. His LP in the early 70s, Super Dude is worth checking out. Somebody's Been Enjoying My Home is a fantastic track imo

RIP Don..

See Saw was his most memorable song but for me "Iron out the rough spots" is my favourite, best ten quid i ever spent.

Sing all your songs in heaven now Don.... S.I.P... Sing in peace
