Born into a family of sharecroppers in Simonton, Texas, and greatly influenced by his Grandfather, a Baptist Minister, Dobie's life revolved around family, the church and music. Thus, Gospel, Country, Tex-Mex and R& B have all found a comfortable home in his repertoire.

Moving from Texas to California in the early 60's, Dobie met Sonny Bono, then A&R manager for Specialty Records. That encounter led to his first notable single, "Look At Me." (later recorded by The Righteous Brothers). Although "Look At Me" remained on the charts a healthy five weeks, Dobie's real breakthrough came in 1965 with the release of "The 'In' Crowd."

In Hollywood he enrolled in acting classes, and appeared in Theatre-group Productions, including "A Raisin In The Sun," "The Amen Corner," "Look Homeward Angel" and "Rhinoceros." His dramatic gifts eventually landed him a role in the L.A. production of the Mega - Hit, Musical "Hair," in which he remained for two and a half years.

Dobie's voice was also being heard on a number of motion picture soundtracks: Uptown Saturday Night, Casey's Shadow, The Commitment and Dick Clark's teen musical extravaganza, "Out Of Sight, among them....

Very sad news, as with so many other amazing influential soul artists, writers etc this year it seems.

I can distinctly remember hearing In Crowd and Out On The Floor for the very first time at a school disco circa '82/3 when I was 11 or 12 and listening / watching some older kids dancing "differently" to these and other great records like them. For me at the time stood out clearly as being so much different / better than most of the other music at those regular school discos. I watched and joined in and somehow knew there and then that soul / dance music would firmly be in my life. It remains so and always will.

Thanks for that Dobie Gray and RIP

Just to state the obvious. Is there a greater feelgood record then "Out on the floor"? One of the first records most of us will have heard in our early days on the scene.

A very talented musician as well as a provider of great mempries.

God bless you Dobie.

agree with every thing you say ' huge loss

A sad loss indeed. I remember 'The in crowd' being the big Mod anthem in the Mid Sixties closley followed by 'See you at the Go Go' then early seventies 'Out on the floor' became a Northern Soul classic & rightly so. Dobie Gray was somebody very special. R.I.P. Dobie, yor legacy lives on.
