Been seeing screen caps of this getting posted about on Instagram today. Know not everyone likes or appreciates Craig Charles but wondered what peoples thoughts were on the article.

As the 50th anniversary of legendary Northern Soul venue Wigan Casino looms, BBC 6 Music has announced plans to mark the milestone with a night of special shows dedicated to the hugely beloved underground movement...

We caught up with Craig Charles ahead of the broadcast to chat about the vitality and community of the movement, and the reasons for why it still holds a pivotal place in British youth culture history.

Tell us a little bit about your personal history with Northern Soul and the stand out record or single which had the biggest impact on you?

Craig Charles: I was too young to go to Wigan Casino but a couple of kids in my school who were a couple of years older, they used to get the bus from Smithdown Road every Friday night and used to beg me to come with them. My mum and dad wouldn’t let me go! So I was an outsider looking in on a Monday at these tired and weary faces and people explaining to me what the atmosphere at these places was like. You have to remember that youth culture at that time was very, very tribal. You had your punks, your rockers, your skinheads, suedeheads, guys into prog rock, your two-tone guys. There was an awful lot of pent-up aggression – loads of fighting. So, they told me about this place where everyone seemed to be happy. Everyone just danced. It was all just about dancing and music. That was my first introduction to it – as an outsider. There are two stand out records for me and they’re probably big ones in the Northern Soul cannon. Al Wilson’s The Snake and Frankie Valli’s The Night. They’re two records that on my show get requested more than any other record.

Why didn’t they interview Richard or one of many others who are and have been involved with the scene.  WTF does Craig Charles know? He’s never been on the scene.

You've only got to read the article to understand that it is the scene, but not as we know / remember it.  PS: Richard is in it.

Craig Charles neither is nor ever has been part of any scene you or I have been involved with. He has no real idea what happens. I’ve seen him at his normal gigs, hevturns up and then buggers off when he’s done his bit.

I’m afraid it’s the time when all the part timers will come out of the woodwork, We all know so it shouldn’t really bother us, pretenders,part timers, phoneys really their just leaves off a tree, by October most of them will have disappeared again,

Possibly cross wires I think , Chalky is talking about the original topic , not the post by Soulandy which does feature Richard and more , I could be wrong !

The less said about him the better. I know some quite disturbing tales of him in the 90s oh yes, and that's all I have to say.

How does a journalist come up with this crap and not ask, couldn't I talk to someone who was actually at Wigan? and if this is about now why don't we get someone into the scene now?

 

And we could all be slagging off RS and one of those self proclaimed yoof leaders of the scene instead😂

Got to say I'm at the stage now where any main stream media outlet that mentions Wigan or Northern Soul is avoided like the plague. 

Same old rubbish usually spouted by the same suspects who by now have convinced themselves that they are telling the truth, (we all know who the main culprit is), and repeated as fact by cretins who know no better..... It's a parallel universe I have no wish to populate. 

If you know you know as they say.

You never know.........

I didn't mention Richards name, you did & it wasn't him my dig was aimed at -  but until anyone has the nerve to dispel the myths about Billboard, millions through the door at Wigan, no drug busts, etc etc I stand by my same old rubbish statement. If Richard or anyone else do this on Craig Charles show I will apologize unreservedly !

Soul Source seems to be cosying up to clueless BBC presenters. I remember, around the time Craig Charles' Coronation Street character was - all of a sudden - a big northern soulie, I saw him interviewed and he admitted he was never much into northern soul and Frank Wilson seemed to be the only record he knew.
