Hey Mike - Great post. Forgot how much I love Latin Jazz / Soul Jazz, takes me back to the days of the Jazz Bops in Brighton - remember seeing Pucho & his Band on one occasion - awesome. Artist like Bataan, Baretto, Fania All Stars are so under-rated...thanks for sharing the Vid - look forward to the full length version.

An older Puerto Rican couple I know who lives in the apartment building I live at here in the Bronx remember Joe Bataan when he was a gang leader in Spanish Harlem before he started his band. They said he was one dude you did not mess with at the time! I love how he speaks in the third person in the video clip. Years ago I met a woman who was previousley married to Smitty from the Manhattens. She told me that Jackie Wilson used to always speak in the third person. He'd be backstage and be telling all the ladies, "come here baby sit on Jackie's lap".

The UK releases of Ray Baretto-Acid,Louiz Ramirez,Willie Bobo, Cal Tjader,Jimmy Castor-Magic Sax/Hey Leroy....amaze me.Were they hoping for a fluke hit? or aiming at the hispanic community in the UK?.

Fabulous...can't wait for the finished article!

Tangent...does anyone know the name of an old 80's TV documentary on Latin music which featured a lot of Machito?

Hi

The documentary ' Machito - A Latin Jazz Legacy ' may be the programme that you are referring to.

I still have it on VHS , are there copyright restrictions, or do you think that I can upload it onto the sight.? I am sure that a lot of Soul Sourcers would appreciate seeing the masters in full flow.

The footage of the dancers from The Palladium is awesome and an there is an amazing street party in new York with Ray Baretto, Dizzy, Candido and Machito himself, like an

old Grandfather type, respected by all of the local community.

Yours

Nick.
