Do  I Love You ? A brand new play by John Godber

Here's the Company blurb ...

'Touring this autumn…

This hilarious new dance fuelled comedy follows burger bar employees, Natalie and Kyle, as they fall in love with Northern Soul. Trouble is Natalie and Kyle are not that soulful!

But long after a weekender in Skegness our star-crossed lovers can’t wait for the next all nighter in Blackpool.  Out on the floor they are in a world of their own, far away from egg muffins and deep fried chicken. But as the north levels up Natalie and Kyle’s life takes a downturn, and they find themselves steered by music which was a failure the first time round, where has it come from and what does it mean?

It’s all about living for now, as Nat and Kyle realise that Time Will Pass You By! So spread the talc and polish your brogues, we are staying up all weekend!

Multi award winning playwright John Godber has been a fan of Northern Soul since 1972. Here the author of the iconic Bouncers helps keep the faith with a nod to Frank Wilson!

Do I love you; indeed I do! '

Does John Godber come to soul nights? Never seen him in Hull, even for researching this. obviously it doesn't mean he doesn't attend, but nobody has mentioned anything, not a dicky bird. Im thinking of that play scene in League of Gentleman with Chubby Brown

I met him in 83 when i was training at Breton Hall.

He's one of those tourist attendees who went a few times in 70's. All his plays are formulaic and parody...over acted and quite superficial in content.

So, will match the choreography i reckon, which is done by one of the  YouTube NS parody duo Sal & Pops.

Lots of acting out, gurnying (minus the drugs), flailing arms etc.

That's sacrilege - they can play The Snake all day long; but Curtis?

I get mixed up; there seems to be loads of different blonde women singing and dancing to "Northern Soul". There's the woman who sings to a backing track, I think her first video was Judy Street. Is that a different woman. 🤔

It doesn't really matter to me, I don't take any of them seriously; but, if they're having fun and enjoying themselves then I guess that's all that matters. I wonder if there are any brunettes. 🤔

I'm not too bright, and should avoid pretentious words like that: a leftover from having one foot in academia: which is full of words that are not needed!

A figure of speech referring to an old repeated phrase or image such as: "there just having fun" or "live and let live" etc.

I used it to refer to something i often come across in NS discussions: a kind of non-care or disengagement via using such phrases.

Interested in the definition of success here? Money? or a soulful homage to the scene? Or....?

I for one am glad you enjoyed it. Also pretty "brave" for being 1 of 1 (presently).

It's not for me though.
