2011-03-10: The Prestatyn Weekender - March 10th - 14th 2011 magazine cover

A highlight of the upcoming Prestayn Weekender thread, not just who's going but full of artist news, articles info and history on the various rooms/clubs/nighters etc

Here's Andy Dyson words on Lifeline Allnighters who are let loose on the Friday night in arena 2

LIFELINE - 70's SPECIAL ALL-NITER @ PRESTATYN - Friday Night - ARENA 2

During the turn of the millennium the Northern Soul scene's ability to survive and thrive in a period of general instability nationwide is unquestionable and testament to it's versatility! Although the very grass roots of traditionalism remains deeply ingrained musically and socially, the scene has never seen such diversity - northern, R&B, modern all neatly engraved on the soul scene's milestone. We have over forty years worth of fabulous black music to choose from, so much so that the three main categories are partitioned into countless sub styles - all with their own varying levels of success. The upfront/cutting edge style, I firmly believe to be the most difficult of them all to work, stabilize and maintain with any kind of longevity. Many scenarios' manipulate and govern the amount of bodies through any venue door, the current financial climate, average age of punter etc. Not to mention in Lifeline's case in particular the high level of quality music expected at every single all-nighter with very little, if not any room for compromise. These hurdles of course are only cleared due to the unique entertainment package that Lifeline provides.

Towards the end of the 90's and certainly early 2000,the upfront side of our scene really was in the worst shape that I could remember - A million and one soul nights and maybe a few less all-nighters, predominantly playing the standard oldies playlists. It's fair to say that even the so-called forward thinking venues really were just going through the proverbial motions. Everyone that I spoke to certainly felt the same way, but nothing was being done to sort the situation - for the increasing numbers of despondent souls. I'd mentioned to Mick H during one of his events at the Union Club (Nottingham) about teaming up and giving an all-nighter a go, Mick was up for it. So the foundations were laid, a blinder of a venue found and a crack team of residents booked.

The year was 2004 and what can only be described as one of the ultimate all-nighter venues of all time, Sheridan's, Ravensthorpe near Dewsbury...down home, dirty and dingy and run by Chris and Rodz a great couple who ran the venue for soul promotions only...Now that makes a change! The month was February and a virtual lockout for the first event, over 300 people turned out and everyone had a whale of a time - the promotion name Lifeline did exactly what it said on the tin and then some!

The resident team has stayed consistent to the present day in the form of Butch, Soul Sam, Andy Dyson, Mick H, Cliff Steele, Chalky and more recently Rob Smith also many guests who are all at the top of their game including - Tim (Tiny Tail) Brown, Kitch, Dean Anderson, Dave Thorley, Alex Jones, Ady Pountain, Andy Whitmore, Dave Welding, Marco, Arthur Fenn and many more. As well as the seasoned and experienced guys the early hours are allocated to up and coming dj's and some long term hoarders of vinyl, namely Nick Stevenson (Lifeline's first ever DJ), G. Mahood, Killa, Kev Murphy, Kev Featherstone, Dawn Carmen, Nicola Anderson, Marc Forrest - the list goes on!

The road has definitely been a rocky one, when Sheridan's closed its doors Lifeline became the Romany's of the scene. The Fox at Colsterworth, a decent venue off the A1 motorway, but happen it was better suited to the swinging and wife swap nights that were hosted there. Rumour has it Tim Brown was a regular there on his way to various natural history museums... Next venue was to be Ye Olde Bell at Barnby Moor, rather a splendid building steeped in history. We had some great times there including a couple of weekenders 2006 and 2007 that people still talk about today. The powers that be decided on a multi million pound refit and that's when we had to leave, the management never did quite take to staying up all night especially when was Mick H DJ'ing!

This very nearly was the end of the road for Lifeline, we had no venue and nowhere to go, Chris Waterman kindly got us the Stables - junction 11 club which has been the real making of Lifeline. The club boasts a fabulous dance floor, balcony and all-night bar and in our opinion the best 60's, 70's and 80's upfront black music policy on the planet!

We run bi-monthly and get 250 to 300 in at every one; if you fancy a safe and friendly night out we'll see you there.

Friday night promises to be a quality night of music in the modern room, I can't wait to hear Jesse James perform live then the Lifeline team will prove it's versatility with our very own brand of quality 70's upfront soul with I dare say some classics from the genre to complete the nights entertainment.

See you all in there.

Andy Dyson.

Musical highlights for me were Friday night at the Lifeline special, the 'wow' live acts extravaganza (especially Jesse James and the Volumes/Magnetics), the Willinghams' room and the Queen Vic 70's afternoons.

Met up with a couple of close friends I hadn't seen in ages and many others who regularly put up with my hypo mouth once it touches alcohol. There were also a few surreal moments over the weekend, but best put that down to lack of sleep.

Many thanks to all those involved in organising and giving it their all (must be so hard trying to make everyone happy), plus all those playing their sounds from the heart.

Casualty of the weekend was leaving my wok behind in the kitchen cupboard and the one person who felt very unwell after my cooking (yes, only the one this time! )

For those that missed out because March 7-13 was National Sleep Awareness week, rest assured that Prestatyn 2012 was announced as going ahead. I can't wait to hear which live acts they will bring over for that!

Lightweight!!! .Paul, you forgot about ironing your trousers as well, within 5 minutes of being there (Spot will confirm).

I'll keep this brief.(some of this may not be true*).All of this IMHO.

Started out at 8pm Friday arrived at 11pm.After finding chalet at 3rd attempt....out and into modern room to have a listen to Jesse James.

All went bizarre after that. For instance,Karen had a false tache on,Mr Weston had a trilby on,and there was a wedding in the main room on Saturday afternoon !.(i joined the queue near the wedding party and ending up holding the bride's train*.Strange cos most brides carry a bouquet, boom boom i'm here all week.).Congrats to the happy couple btw.

Back to Jess James he did "Are you gonna leave me" and about 6 modern tracks that lasted longer than a DFS sale, not for me sorry. But then i am a Philistine.

Lifeline 70's niter followed, could have done with more support.Didn't quite work for me.Top of the class - Cliff Steele.

Saturday lunch,Queen Vic.12.30 till 5.00.Put the world to rights with the Family Babcock and my oldest mate Steve Plumb*(thanks for the tenner mate,i owe you one* !!:hatsoff2: )Top spots from him,Sam,Kenny Mac,SteveG.

Walking back thru the modern room, they were playing some jazz funk (?) and someone was playing what i can only describe as a Peter Sellers type Clouseu record on acid.Did me head in.Funny though.

Saturday night,Redemption. .Walking in about 10, the cast from the Jeremy Kyle Show were already assembling, most had given their carers the slip,or completey ignored their restraining orders.

Redemption yet again the highlight for me all on top form.

So in brief....enjoyed it.Great company and music.Made it in the main room a few times, seemed busy most of the time.

Love,Kev.xxx

What a fantastic weekend! I warn you now this is going to be a long one.

Friday/Saturday

We don't usually go until Saturday afternoon but after a trip to our local soul night thought we would go early and support Mr. Willingham in the main room. I was sure he was on 4.30-5.30. After arriving at 4.15 and dumping the records off at the chalet we hot footed it over to Arena 1 only to find he was on at 2. Doh! Sorry C&M - our intentions were honourable but our (or should that be my) sense of time/reality was severely lacking.

It was then a quick hop skip and a jump over to Arena 2 to catch the tail end of the Lifeline extravaganza. Cliff was on when we got there and so was the heating! OMG I have never known anything like it :yes:

Not many in but the music was top notch. Mick followed Cliff and by the end of his set there was about 10 of us left and we were all in agreement that a great time was had by all. Some of you would say it would be impossible for that few people in a room the size of a small country to have a fantastic time. Well those who were there will tell you otherwise. A dozen smiling, happy, sweaty faces had to be kicked out of there by the Pontins staff - all of us shouting for one more record. It was ace!

Saturday/Sunday

Straight from being manhandled out of the venue we called for our bags en-route back to the chalet. Once inside got a couple of hours kip and woke refreshed and eager to see the live acts rehearsing. Unsure of the time this would take place I thought I would text Ian Cunliffe as he is always on the pulse of such things? The text came back 1pm but that there was a wedding on at the moment. I didn't give this a second thought as there had been church bells in the distance for a while so I just assumed that was the wedding he was referring to.

Upon entering I was informed that the rehearsals had in fact already taken place in order to accommodate the aforementioned wedding. Congratulations to the happy couple!

We watched from the sidelines for a bit and then stood around chatting until it was time to meet Kev & Sharon and go for some dinner. After a lovely carvery it was straight back to the chalet to get ready for the night ahead.

Upon walking in to the new Redemption room I will admit to not being entirely convinced at first. It seemed very bright and the fish and chip ambiance seemed all wrong. I will hold my hands up though and say that my first impressions were definitely miles out because once the lights were down the room took on a whole new feel and it was more than good - it was great!

Before I knew it, it was time for the live acts and as everyone knows, I love the live acts. Yet again they were superb. Nowhere delivers the goods like Prestatyn. I must apologise to Ian and Kev for spoiling their recordings of the acts, James Bell in particular, as it will no doubt be ruined by me singing with all my might at the top of voice all the way through. We were all touched by the grand finale and the sentiment behind it. Best wishes to Bernie and his family.

It was then straight back to Redemption. Ted was on and the room soon started to fill up again. The next few hours were some of the best I have ever experienced in all the years I have been going to Prestatyn. The music and the atmosphere were incredible and the dance floor was top notch too. A million times better than the one in the old room and no noise filtering in from next door. The place was rocking!

Nearing the end of Mick H’s spot I could hear something in the background and for a couple of records I thought someone had left the door to the main room open. That was until Maria announced that it was in fact the fire alarm going off :hatsoff2:

It was then a case of everybody outside until we were given the all clear to return. We stood around for 10 minutes or so but then decided to retreat to the dryness of the chalet until people were allowed back in. Luck for us we could see the entrance from our penthouse and we were back inside 20 mins or so later. The room steadily filled up again and everyone was soon back into the swing of things.

Straight after George’s set I nipped back to the chalet to find Tony as he had gone back to get a record and failed to return. I found him munching on some cereal and as soon as he had finished we went back to catch the last hour or so in that great little room.

We were about to go back in when we stopped to speak to Keith and Sandra Money who were stood by the door. This was just as Mick H was taking to the stage to begin his set in the main room. I am afraid we never made it any further as we were treated to what has to be the best hour of top of the range, kick your ass onto the dance floor, take no prisoners oldies (for want of a better word) I have ever heard in my life. Honest to God it was fantastic. I could not believe what I was hearing. Awesome doesn’t come close to doing that set justice.

Sunday

After hobbling back to the chalet for a quick shower, it was then over to the cafeteria for some breakfast where we had a great laugh and chat with Pete and Craig. Gilly had to use sign language though as he had lost his voice. I knew I shouldn’t have laughed because an hour or so later I completely lost mine.

It was then back to pack everything away but before heading home we popped into the pub for a bit to wish Tony happy birthday.

Left at around 2pm and landed home around 3.30pm with no voice and completely knackered from dancing and laughing so much (Terry you are hilarious).

What a fantastic weekend! Loved every minute of it

Had a real good time at prestatyn..........many thanks for the lift from my good pal john mcclure and his lady, who's cabin we shared along with irish and carrie which made for a right old giggle. Loved the acts which l stood watching with Tony L ivesly who told me that the VOLUMES were also the chiffons, but l must have missed "sweet talking guy ". Had a real laugh a minute at Kev H and big pauls stories on the saturday lunch.......now heres a thing when we got to the pub there were only about a dozen folk in there. Steve Plumb was playing some nice 70's tunes so we sat up behind the decks so we could chat....as the afternoon progressed and more and folk started to arrive Steves already good set kept getting and better and gradually louder....the upshot what a great set, hardly any of which l knew,my point, he put a round peg in a round hole (music wise) and it was superb well done Mr Plumb. REDEMPTION!!!! thats what we love, most of my time in there music was good and l enjoyed it....had a joke a minute with a few of my pals (all jokes come with no malice what so ever, just fun ). Top sets indeed for me, from ted massive, mick H, andy dyson, soul spam and joan. Good to see scotty from carlisle (who by the way, loves to take the piss, mainly out of me lol ). Went in the main hall for a monster set of great oldies (that you don,t even hear at oldies nights ) from Mick H which had all those knackered folk back on the dancefloor.....it really was a corker!!!......all in all enjoyment was had in bucket loads. tezza tempo and the 4 o,clock flatliners

Carl and I would like to thank all of you who supported the CW Redemption suite on Saturday night. The new room eradicated the issues we have had for the last two years plus we had greater capacity to comfortably accomodate more of you. Have to agree with Joan that on intial viewing it was very light however after I had found my way through yards of white chiffon and turned of the blue lights along the sides of the room and then badgered some poor guy cleaning the kitchen to turn the main lights off the ambience was closer to the feel we were looking for.

As always a massive thanks to all the jocks who made this niter easy for us,all the work is really in the planning, organising the night is what I would imagine is like driving a Rolls Royce, switch on the ignition, take of the hand brake and let quality take control.

NB Only 4 tunes were repeated within ten hours plus, again many thanks to our djs

Enjoyed the weekend highlight for us was Carls spot in the main hall and Jumpin Joan in theRedemption room.

Missed the usual saturday night djs in the main hall, (the bit we especially look forward to) that would be the likes of Butch and T. Brown etc.

to much of the regular stuff pushed out by the regular play it safe djs for our liking.

Redemption was great and needs a bigger room.

thanks to all those who do the stuff to make it work especially J.P

Another great weekend in North Wales. Thanks for the invite to Channel 6 again Colin I always enjoy that part of the weekend.

Highlights for me were:

Jesse James-Fri night...to see the pure pleasure on old soul friends faces. What it's all about for me.

Seeing Tattoo man, (Dore collector exstroadinaire), Dave Hogeson's face when Rita Graham sang GWTWIML accapella in the radio room. Pure heaven. Loved Butch playing Boulevard Sat, Lifeline session, on a system that allows it to breath. Cliffe Steele Wowed me with his set that night as well.

Trying to dance to a record Sam played towards the end of his set in Redemption room-Big mistake but enjoyed the Ongoing Times, New Day.

The live show on Saturday, as fine as can be again. Well done!

Finally getting some of my Lorraine Chander/Volumes/Precisions records signed-We wouldn't be there without you. Thankyou.

Didn't make Sunday as I took to my bed.

Candle both ends burnt.

Hats off to John, All the Marks and Colin.

Roll on The 11th.

Best

Squeaky Kev.
