2011-03-10: The Prestatyn Weekender - March 10th - 14th 2011 magazine cover

A highlight of the upcoming Prestayn Weekender thread, not just who's going but full of artist news, articles info and history on the various rooms/clubs/nighters etc

Here's Andy Dyson words on Lifeline Allnighters who are let loose on the Friday night in arena 2

LIFELINE - 70's SPECIAL ALL-NITER @ PRESTATYN - Friday Night - ARENA 2

During the turn of the millennium the Northern Soul scene's ability to survive and thrive in a period of general instability nationwide is unquestionable and testament to it's versatility! Although the very grass roots of traditionalism remains deeply ingrained musically and socially, the scene has never seen such diversity - northern, R&B, modern all neatly engraved on the soul scene's milestone. We have over forty years worth of fabulous black music to choose from, so much so that the three main categories are partitioned into countless sub styles - all with their own varying levels of success. The upfront/cutting edge style, I firmly believe to be the most difficult of them all to work, stabilize and maintain with any kind of longevity. Many scenarios' manipulate and govern the amount of bodies through any venue door, the current financial climate, average age of punter etc. Not to mention in Lifeline's case in particular the high level of quality music expected at every single all-nighter with very little, if not any room for compromise. These hurdles of course are only cleared due to the unique entertainment package that Lifeline provides.

Towards the end of the 90's and certainly early 2000,the upfront side of our scene really was in the worst shape that I could remember - A million and one soul nights and maybe a few less all-nighters, predominantly playing the standard oldies playlists. It's fair to say that even the so-called forward thinking venues really were just going through the proverbial motions. Everyone that I spoke to certainly felt the same way, but nothing was being done to sort the situation - for the increasing numbers of despondent souls. I'd mentioned to Mick H during one of his events at the Union Club (Nottingham) about teaming up and giving an all-nighter a go, Mick was up for it. So the foundations were laid, a blinder of a venue found and a crack team of residents booked.

The year was 2004 and what can only be described as one of the ultimate all-nighter venues of all time, Sheridan's, Ravensthorpe near Dewsbury...down home, dirty and dingy and run by Chris and Rodz a great couple who ran the venue for soul promotions only...Now that makes a change! The month was February and a virtual lockout for the first event, over 300 people turned out and everyone had a whale of a time - the promotion name Lifeline did exactly what it said on the tin and then some!

The resident team has stayed consistent to the present day in the form of Butch, Soul Sam, Andy Dyson, Mick H, Cliff Steele, Chalky and more recently Rob Smith also many guests who are all at the top of their game including - Tim (Tiny Tail) Brown, Kitch, Dean Anderson, Dave Thorley, Alex Jones, Ady Pountain, Andy Whitmore, Dave Welding, Marco, Arthur Fenn and many more. As well as the seasoned and experienced guys the early hours are allocated to up and coming dj's and some long term hoarders of vinyl, namely Nick Stevenson (Lifeline's first ever DJ), G. Mahood, Killa, Kev Murphy, Kev Featherstone, Dawn Carmen, Nicola Anderson, Marc Forrest - the list goes on!

The road has definitely been a rocky one, when Sheridan's closed its doors Lifeline became the Romany's of the scene. The Fox at Colsterworth, a decent venue off the A1 motorway, but happen it was better suited to the swinging and wife swap nights that were hosted there. Rumour has it Tim Brown was a regular there on his way to various natural history museums... Next venue was to be Ye Olde Bell at Barnby Moor, rather a splendid building steeped in history. We had some great times there including a couple of weekenders 2006 and 2007 that people still talk about today. The powers that be decided on a multi million pound refit and that's when we had to leave, the management never did quite take to staying up all night especially when was Mick H DJ'ing!

This very nearly was the end of the road for Lifeline, we had no venue and nowhere to go, Chris Waterman kindly got us the Stables - junction 11 club which has been the real making of Lifeline. The club boasts a fabulous dance floor, balcony and all-night bar and in our opinion the best 60's, 70's and 80's upfront black music policy on the planet!

We run bi-monthly and get 250 to 300 in at every one; if you fancy a safe and friendly night out we'll see you there.

Friday night promises to be a quality night of music in the modern room, I can't wait to hear Jesse James perform live then the Lifeline team will prove it's versatility with our very own brand of quality 70's upfront soul with I dare say some classics from the genre to complete the nights entertainment.

See you all in there.

Andy Dyson.

i think that folks are getting a little heated here , lets just see what happens and then if you dont like the new changes , then dont attend again , things are a little out of the co promoters hands because of the takeover, new ventures dont always follow what is booked , and then you have promoters who couldnt give a toss what you think as long as they have your money ,on this occasion these lads have too go with what the new owners say , it may not be too many peoples expectations as bands and d,j,s being taken off , but there trying too make the effort for a good weekend, so give em a chance and like myself , if your not satisfied then say so in big letters afterwards, but at least lets see what comes of it , the very open minded , kev Thomas :huh::lol: the soul ninja lol :(:Dph34r.gifph34r.gifph34r.gifph34r.gifph34r.gifph34r.gif

too toad , i wasnt saying these lads dont give a toss , i was reffering too other promoters who will remain nameless, we know who they are, this isnt the first time things have gone wrong with weekenders and it wont be the last , but at least they are trying too resolve issues, i went too a certain weekender years ago too see one act , charged £50 for 2 , and the promoters knew full well on the tuesday the act had a throat infection and still charged full price , all im saying is give them a chance too work with what they have :huh::lol:  :(:Dph34r.gifph34r.gifph34r.gifph34r.gifph34r.gifph34r.gifph34r.gifph34r.gifph34r.gifph34r.gif

Knowing the guys that have been involved in all the preparation in creating this event pretty well .I am sure they do care Toad.

I fully understand peoples frustrations but I think your energy would be better served actually contacting those that have changed what was originally on offer this being " Brittania Hotels " then maybe they might understand the volume of unhappy customers and the disapointment by those that share your concerns.

I am sure what we know as "promoters" are actually doing all they can to put together an event that most will find enjoyable for the weekend.

It must be hard enough for these guys as they know alot of you Personally without having to seeing negative assumptions being made about them . The bad boys in all of this is Brittania Hotels.

I hope in all this confusion someone involved with Britania has remembered to apply for a drink's licence ! come on Tim it'll be a great weekend please think how Jon , mark and fish must be feeling they all deserve a drink off all of us , there are much bigger events that take place like reading , Glastonbury festivals that have loads of artists , dance tents ect they alway's have cancelations there's nothing you can do but go and enjoy the music ,That's what we'll all do but i do think that Britania should have let this weekend run and reorganise the October event to suit them.Once again please think about the guy's who have put lot's of time and effort in to this perhaps any one with heaveyer views should contact Britania directly with thier concerns there's nothing like people power perhaps if they get enough firm but polite emails they will listen to thier customers all the best Sy.

QUOTE ME AND I'LL REPLY

Tim,

You seem like a very angry man from your posts !

No-one is happy about what has happened, least of all us as promoters - we have had to deal with a sequence of enforced events that have been put upon us since the weekend that we new nothing about prior to that - the new owners took over at the end of last week and made certain cut backs (not weeks ago) so we are sorting out everything as quickly as we can - there is no agenda here to hold back information or mis-lead our valued paying attendees. You can't always give an immediate answer to a question, if the issue of the question is still being resolved !

We have been working very hard since then in the last 3 days to put in place once again what we feel will be the best possible event under those circumstances - some of your comments are wildy off the mark.

I promote the 'Modern' side of Prestatyn and John takes care of the 'Northern' - I have made it quite clear what is happening on the 'Modern' side of the event both before I posted the revised schedule yesterday and prior to that in the last couple of days. I wasn't in a position to give out more information three days ago as I hadn't even started to work out what we could do in terms of revised scheduling or moving of sessions. As stated and now published in full the 'Modern' side of the event is now minus 1 act (The Sunburst Band), 1 music session and 1 dj from the original advertised line-up.

John is still working on his re-vised timings, but I'm sure when they're finished (in the next day I should think) he will post all the necessary information you require - as far as I'm aware - there are about 3 dj's missing from his original line-up, all of his 'Northern Soul' acts are exactly as originally advertised, the rooms are as originally advertised except for 1 session where he has kindly accommodated Friday night for us in Arena 4 (Redemption) after us losing the 'House Of Soul' room.

I am confident that with the 100 odd dj's on offer across 4 rooms at this years 10th Anniversary and live performances from THE VOLUMES / MAGNETICS, BENNY TROY, RITA GRAHAM, LORRAINE CHANDLER, JAMES BELL, JESSE JAMES & COOL MILLION most people will have a fantastic time - it is impossible however to keep everybody happy all of the time during a weekend, but we'll certainly try !

There has been alot of wild speculation and untrue fact posted about the event over the past couple of days by certain individuals - most of it quite innocent and harmless, and unfortunately some of it by those intent on trying to slag the event for nothing other than politically motivated reasons - a bit sad really but true.

I would suggest if you are not happy with this explanation you could always contact the reservation booking line that you made the booking on and request a full refund as I wouldn't want you to be attending an event you're clearly not happy about in terms of what is now on offer.

Best Regards

Fish

Looking forward to a brilliant weekender and do appreciate all the hard work being carried out by all promotors Fish/Mark & co...also understand some of Toads points of veiw plus many others...now Fish has explained the situation with the Britania group and the reason behind the delayed announcement...all we can do is show the Britania group what being a soulie is all about and leave Fish/Mark and all others involved to manage these events in the future on behalfs of the Britania group [fingers crossed], we all know money talks and what chance have the Britania chain got in making money within the months of March/October if it wasn't for these Promoters and the people on the Soulscene who make this event the biggest in the country....Roll on next week...Froggy[Preston].

Brit Hotels have not long taken over the Pontins organisation and I guess it's taken a few weeks to go through the events and costings, then the decision process with budgets for each event, so it's no wonder that it's only coming out at sure a late date.

Also for those that never attended the early Prestatyn's or have short memories, the event has been reduced to the format it started with, it was a great weekend then so I can't see why it won't be a great weekend this time around. At the end of the day it's what you make of it, if you want a good time I guess you have a good time regardless of these changes, disappointing as they are.

I find this a really insulting thing to say about TED!

Ted Massey SUPPORTS venurs ALL OVER the Country , ESPECIALLY when he isnt DJing at the venue

, even Oldies Dos!!

My god people have short memories over Pretatyn!!

The Promotors PAST and PRESENT over TEN YEARS have brought us some of the best ARTISTS, BEST DJs and FANTASTIC TIMES that anyone could wish to hope for

I find iy incomprehesible ( cant spell lol) that the Promotors are being slagged by some under such difficuld circumstances having being takem over by a large Hotel group with i would imagine little understanding of what goes on there!!

I sure behinf the scenes the Promotors are vfighting to give us the BEST weekender they can with what constraints theve been given!!

What if Brittania had pulled the plug ALL TOGETHER!!

Which im sure may have been an option!!

Please Give that lads a chance to sort it out it must be hell behind the scenes!!

Nige B ( Punter for10 years and the last 4 years DJ there)

True words Nige. I know our gang were wondering if the week-end would even happen when Pontins went into administration.

Looking forward to another brilliant week-end of soul.
