2011-03-10: The Prestatyn Weekender - March 10th - 14th 2011 magazine cover

A highlight of the upcoming Prestayn Weekender thread, not just who's going but full of artist news, articles info and history on the various rooms/clubs/nighters etc

Here's Andy Dyson words on Lifeline Allnighters who are let loose on the Friday night in arena 2

LIFELINE - 70's SPECIAL ALL-NITER @ PRESTATYN - Friday Night - ARENA 2

During the turn of the millennium the Northern Soul scene's ability to survive and thrive in a period of general instability nationwide is unquestionable and testament to it's versatility! Although the very grass roots of traditionalism remains deeply ingrained musically and socially, the scene has never seen such diversity - northern, R&B, modern all neatly engraved on the soul scene's milestone. We have over forty years worth of fabulous black music to choose from, so much so that the three main categories are partitioned into countless sub styles - all with their own varying levels of success. The upfront/cutting edge style, I firmly believe to be the most difficult of them all to work, stabilize and maintain with any kind of longevity. Many scenarios' manipulate and govern the amount of bodies through any venue door, the current financial climate, average age of punter etc. Not to mention in Lifeline's case in particular the high level of quality music expected at every single all-nighter with very little, if not any room for compromise. These hurdles of course are only cleared due to the unique entertainment package that Lifeline provides.

Towards the end of the 90's and certainly early 2000,the upfront side of our scene really was in the worst shape that I could remember - A million and one soul nights and maybe a few less all-nighters, predominantly playing the standard oldies playlists. It's fair to say that even the so-called forward thinking venues really were just going through the proverbial motions. Everyone that I spoke to certainly felt the same way, but nothing was being done to sort the situation - for the increasing numbers of despondent souls. I'd mentioned to Mick H during one of his events at the Union Club (Nottingham) about teaming up and giving an all-nighter a go, Mick was up for it. So the foundations were laid, a blinder of a venue found and a crack team of residents booked.

The year was 2004 and what can only be described as one of the ultimate all-nighter venues of all time, Sheridan's, Ravensthorpe near Dewsbury...down home, dirty and dingy and run by Chris and Rodz a great couple who ran the venue for soul promotions only...Now that makes a change! The month was February and a virtual lockout for the first event, over 300 people turned out and everyone had a whale of a time - the promotion name Lifeline did exactly what it said on the tin and then some!

The resident team has stayed consistent to the present day in the form of Butch, Soul Sam, Andy Dyson, Mick H, Cliff Steele, Chalky and more recently Rob Smith also many guests who are all at the top of their game including - Tim (Tiny Tail) Brown, Kitch, Dean Anderson, Dave Thorley, Alex Jones, Ady Pountain, Andy Whitmore, Dave Welding, Marco, Arthur Fenn and many more. As well as the seasoned and experienced guys the early hours are allocated to up and coming dj's and some long term hoarders of vinyl, namely Nick Stevenson (Lifeline's first ever DJ), G. Mahood, Killa, Kev Murphy, Kev Featherstone, Dawn Carmen, Nicola Anderson, Marc Forrest - the list goes on!

The road has definitely been a rocky one, when Sheridan's closed its doors Lifeline became the Romany's of the scene. The Fox at Colsterworth, a decent venue off the A1 motorway, but happen it was better suited to the swinging and wife swap nights that were hosted there. Rumour has it Tim Brown was a regular there on his way to various natural history museums... Next venue was to be Ye Olde Bell at Barnby Moor, rather a splendid building steeped in history. We had some great times there including a couple of weekenders 2006 and 2007 that people still talk about today. The powers that be decided on a multi million pound refit and that's when we had to leave, the management never did quite take to staying up all night especially when was Mick H DJ'ing!

This very nearly was the end of the road for Lifeline, we had no venue and nowhere to go, Chris Waterman kindly got us the Stables - junction 11 club which has been the real making of Lifeline. The club boasts a fabulous dance floor, balcony and all-night bar and in our opinion the best 60's, 70's and 80's upfront black music policy on the planet!

We run bi-monthly and get 250 to 300 in at every one; if you fancy a safe and friendly night out we'll see you there.

Friday night promises to be a quality night of music in the modern room, I can't wait to hear Jesse James perform live then the Lifeline team will prove it's versatility with our very own brand of quality 70's upfront soul with I dare say some classics from the genre to complete the nights entertainment.

See you all in there.

Andy Dyson.

Can ask that members stop all the second guessing that seems to be going on.

Sure both of the organisers that are members on here have got enough on their plates at the moment & will be on here to let you all know whats happening as soon as they can.

Sorry Martin, I disagree with you, when most of us have paid out money, we have a right to know what the f**k is going on!!!!!!!

Dave in a very bad mood.

John which web site and how soon?

If one of the rooms as gone that people had booked for, than need to know to get money back!

And yes I did want to see Sunburst Band, I had chance before Christmas, but did not go, because was told they where doing Prestatyn.

Rumours galore again, lets get one thing straight no dealer has been cancelled unless they don't want to pay for the accom and pitch, I've been dealing there since the beginning and never had anything free always paid, so there's the truth no organisation is going to turn down money, whoever is running it.

For any who did get it free and suddenly been asked to pay then great join the real world, like the rest of us.

I am currently sorting out a few enforced changes to the 'Modern Soul' side of the event and will be in a position to give a full revised itinerary by the end of tomorrow all being well based on changes made by the new owners Britannia Hotels over the last couple of days.

I can confirm though that The Sunburst Band have been cancelled on Britannia Hotels instruction and that their will be 4 rooms in operation over the weekend instead of the original 5.

All other acts are still contracted and booked to appear at the event.

As I'm still working on re-scheduling, can I just confirm ALL 'Modern Soul' dj's booked to play @ Prestatyn will be doing so over the weekend, bar 1.

Also with the re-scheduling currently in hand, despite losing the 'House Of Soul' Arena we will only lose one session of those originally advertised over the entire weekend : - ))

Please be patient with us (full timings will be re-posted very soon), over what has been a very difficult and enforced sequence of events that are out of our control.

Thanks

That is the most sensible post in the last few days..

Fair enough, people want to know what is going on, but i,m sure that the Midnight Hour team are passing on info as soon as they know it.

Dont think that there is a conspiracy of silence

So Why this sudden " Vent de Panic " ..

After all, haven,t we as paying customers had confidence in J Poole, Fish and Co to produce a Spectacular event for the past 10 years?

If We didn,t have that confidence. Why do so many book blind for the next one not knowing which acts are on?

How many Arenas?

Whos Djing,,, or sometimes even the dates of the Event?

I,m sure it will still be an event to remember whatever restrictions or changes Brittannia bring. So come on Peeps ..

Give the Midnight Hour crew some time to breath.. Trust them not pressure them ... they will still excel .

Regards and Respect ... Brent

There have been a few last minute minor changes but nothing that should affect your enjoyment of the weekender

These changes to the entertainment programme will be on the web site shortly

How vague is this against a backdrop of cancelled room (s) and artists which could greatly affect people's enjoyment of the weekend, maybe even cause them to decide not to attend at all?

As far as can see the official website has dropped some info rather than explained what has happened...hardly what can be called transparent .

Absolutely shocking state of affairs,IMVHO.

So in a nutshell its the dance room that has suffered but us soulful house heads are used to that now. Oh and the Northern room with DJ's allegedly pulling out. I've also heard that some of the Northern acts have been axed.

Trying to combine the dance room with the Modern room just wouldn't work for me nor for most people I know who like dance ...cos not everyone who likes dance likes Modern/Crossover.

Most people I know, including me, that would have attended Prestatyn this month, took their custom elsewhere last year when the demise of the dance room was first announced. Then with Pontins going into administration I felt that it would be wise to keep well away from Pontins as I had it on good authority regarding a separate existing booking that they didn't seem able to give any guarantees on existing bookings. I'd lost faith long before that though.

So for me its roll on weekenders elsewhere later this year...onwards and upwards as the saying goes wink.gifthumbsup.gif

Having said that, I hope that everyone else who attends Prestatyn has a cracking time and is happy with the deal they receive from the new owners. You have a right to get what you pay for after all. Fingers crossed yes.gifthumbsup.gif

It would have been courteous if the new owners had had the decency to confirm their changes in writing to those who had booked and announce those changes somewhere online. Just cos its all last minute doesn't change that.

I'm still very unclear as to the extent of the changes and that's bound to be unsettling for a lot of people who have booked sad.gif

Oh sorry Toad I got it wrong...dance not quite just shoved in Modern Room but in actual fact spread across Modern Room and pub and a chunk pinched from the Redemption Room (now would that be cos they don't need it cos it's not open until the Saturday night)...oh and Cool Million tagged on to end of jazz session at 6pm...now just wtf is all that about then? Are we not worthy of a late night/early morning live act...only now at other unconnected weekenders it seems rolleyes.gif

I'm pretty sure that some will be upset about these so-called "minor changes" and would not see them as "nothing that should affect [their] enjoyment of the weekender"

It seems pretty clear to me that the owners are calling all the shots here and the term "promoter" does not mean what we know it to mean thumbsup.gif I wonder if those advising advised that it would be unwise to interfere with the format in this way....g.gif

I quite like the pub. Even dancing on the tiles is great. I've heard some of the best music in that pub ever with the likes of Steve Green, Keith Money, John Weston and the Soultown lads.

You forgot to add "IMHO".

Had some great times in the Queen Vic,arriving on Friday popping in for a beer first off.Socialising.Then hearing some of the best spots of the weekend.

Sunday night a few years back, especially, was brilliant, musically and socially.IMHO.

I find this a really insulting thing to say about TED!

Ted Massey SUPPORTS venurs ALL OVER the Country , ESPECIALLY when he isnt DJing at the venue

, even Oldies Dos!!

My god people have short memories over Pretatyn!!

The Promotors PAST and PRESENT over TEN YEARS have brought us some of the best ARTISTS, BEST DJs and FANTASTIC TIMES that anyone could wish to hope for

I find iy incomprehesible ( cant spell lol) that the Promotors are being slagged by some under such difficuld circumstances having being takem over by a large Hotel group with i would imagine little understanding of what goes on there!!

I sure behinf the scenes the Promotors are vfighting to give us the BEST weekender they can with what constraints theve been given!!

What if Brittania had pulled the plug ALL TOGETHER!!

Which im sure may have been an option!!

Please Give that lads a chance to sort it out it must be hell behind the scenes!!

Nige B ( Punter for10 years and the last 4 years DJ there)

Never understand why you need to put IMHO after a post. Of course it is my opinion I wouldn't write it otherwise.

Anyway it is my opinion too. Yes there are some great tunes played in there but I go to dance and the Queen Vic does not lend itself to that.

so fookin what ...ive been 9 times..djed once

The argument for me is and if you carnt read i ts in big letters

NO ONES COME ON AND SAID ABOUT THE CHANGES

FISH DID PUT A BIT..

3 LINES FROM JOHN POOLE !

WE HAD TO FIND THESE THINGS OUT FROM A FACE BOOK PAGE.

ALL THE WEEKENDERS HAVE MADE PROFIT ...FACT

I PAID FOR THE WHOLE PACKAGE THAT WAS ADVERTISED INC...THE SUNBURST BAND.

ITS A PUB NOT A SUITABLE DANCE VENUE
